Peer review info

Peer-Review at the FWF: All funded books pass through an independent academic peer review process prior to publication. Either the FWF or the publisher handle the peer review process. The FWF asks for at least one written review from an international renowned expert outside of Austria. In cases where the publisher itself handles the peer review process, the publisher has to ask for at least two peer reviews meeting the requirements of the FWF. This means: Reviews must not be carried out by persons who may have or may be suspected to have a conflict of interest with regard to the authors, editors or other persons involved in the publication. Reviewers are considered to have a conflict of interest in cases where they might benefit personally or financially from the approval or rejection of the application. The same applies to cases where reviewers have worked at the same research institution, published or cooperated with the applicant or another person involved in the publication in the last five years, or where the reviewers have fundamental differences of scholarly opinion or close professional and/or personal relationships with the applicant or another person involved in the publication. Scholars who work in Austria must not be called in as reviewers. Peer reviews must be meaningful and comparable with reviews obtained by the FWF. Publishers could only conduct the peer review by themselves if they have an international peer review process for the selection of publications. The review process must be described in a transparent manner on the web site of the publisher.

Abstract

The current political discourse on the "further development and control of child and youth welfare" attempts to discredit and repress outpatient help for upbringing. The present "plea" interferes professionally and politically in this debate. The authors provide a critical assessment of the current situation of child and youth welfare and in particular of educational assistance and trace the process of the debate on the "further development and control of educational assistance". On the basis of detailed description and analysis of the two basic approaches to action in social work (social work in and with the social space on the one hand and individual casework, e.g. educational assistance, on the other), it deals with the question of whether the controversy alleged by politicians between the two approaches to action is technically justified. In this context, the two approaches to action are presented in their history and development and in their different conceptions. In addition to a clear plea for the preservation and consistently professional design of educational assistance in the context of life-world orientation, this also leads to the realisation that social work in general - and especially in times of neo-liberalisation of the social - is subject to the risk of individualisation. On the other hand, within both approaches it is also possible today to fend off this tendency and to act as a critical force in this society. In addition to the technical, ideological and political examination of the new control intentions of politics vis-à-vis aid for education, this book contains detailed descriptions and discussions on various individual topics, among others: - Technical characteristics, action orientations and process design of the action approaches "Outpatient individual case assistance" and "Work in and with the social space" (8.4 and 9.3, 9.4) - What shares does social work itself have in its partly unprofessional state? Abstract

Abstract

Alan Rogers looks at learning (formal, nonformal and informal) and examines the hidden world of informal (unconscious, unplanned) learning. He points out the importance of informal learning for creating tacit attitudes and values, knowledge and skills which influence (conscious, planned) learning – formal and non-formal. Moreover, he explores the implications of informal learning for educational planners and teachers in the context of lifelong learning. While mainly aimed at adult educators, the book’s arguments apply also to schooling and higher education, in both industrialised societies and developing countries where large numbers of children and adults are not and have not been in school and so rely on informal learning to manage change.

Abstract

Accelerated forms of criminal proceedings have become enormously important in many jurisdictions. But how do authorities achieve this acceleration in practice? The author illustrates this using the example of the Swiss criminal order procedure. On the basis of a file analysis, the formal and informal strategies are identified with which the police and the public prosecutor's office are able to construct the trap characteristics that make a quick conviction by order of summary punishment admissible.
