Abstract

The presented volume aims to carry out a socio-cultural case study focusing on two abandoned Nubian villages in Upper Egypt, which are regarding their formation and abandonment closely connected with the construction of the British Dam south of Aswan and the following floods around 1900. Besides the documentation of architecture and associated find material, the special nature of the research strategy involved a close cooperation with the descendents of the village inhabitants and other Nubians still living in the sourroundings of the affected area.Through the interdisciplinary research strategy and the combination of a variety of methods in the fields of Archaeology, Building research and Social Anthropology, standard interpretations could be reflected upon, questioned and if necessary corrected, wherefore this study makes an important contribution to the discussion of cultural formation processes and their transformation into the archaeological record as well as bringing insights into the debate on context interpretation of material culture.

Abstract

Appian’s Celtic History, which deals with the military conflicts between Romans and Celts from the 4th cent. BC until the conquest of Gaul by Caesar, is despite its fragmentary state a valuable source, as it contains various information documented nowhere else or significantly different to those traditions attested by other authors. In addition to the Greek text and a German translation of the individual fragments, the present publication offers above all the first detailed commentary, which makes this little regarded source accessible.

Abstract

The study of the Attic sarcophagi from Ephesos throws a light on the tectonics, the ornaments, the iconography and the stylistic development as a basis for a relative chronology of the genre on site. The results of this study gain in importance as they can be correlated with chronologically "fixed" data - see the Aristides sarcophagus with its portrait and the associated inscription on the sarcophagus base. The results can be compared with other Attic sarcophagi and be applied to other genres of the imperial Attic sculpture, so that the importance of the Attic sarcophagi as one of the leading forms of the Greek sculpture of the imperial period is underlined.

Abstract

In the early Roman imperial period, the remains of an opulent banquet were filled in a pit in Hanghaus 2 of Ephesus. By evaluating the thousands of artifacts and biogenic material, it was possible to reconstruct the feast behind it and to provide a conclusive assumption for its cause. Most likely, it has to be understood as a Cena Publica in honor of a son who was introduced to adult life by putting on the Praetexta toga.

Abstract

The volume, which has emerged from an international conference of the same title, unites a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions on invasions of Goths and other Germanic tribes into the Roman Empire, focusing primarily on the third-century CE. The newly discovered fragments of the lost work Scythica by the third-century historian Dexippus of Athens, the so-called Scythica Vindobonensia alias Dexippus Vindobonensis, which survived in a Greek palimpsest kept in the Austrian National Library in Vienna, have great impact on the study of this field. The contributions explore the Vienna fragments in their historical and historiographical contexts, from the Roman to the Byzantine Era, and the history of the invasions themselves.

Abstract

The study examines the friezes of the Heroon of Trysa in context of Lycian culture and society and interprets the selection of the picture themes. In a very exceptional way the friezes visualize Greek, Lycian and Persian subjects and contents which characterize the world of the Lycians and meet the requirements of the tomb owner. The first part of the publication includes an introduction, the status of research, typological and iconographical analysis of the friezes, chapters on the style, the interpretation of the Heroon, and a catalogue, including description and technical information on the friezes and bibliographical abbrevations. The first part of the 2-volume publication includes an introduction, the status of research, typological and iconographical analysis of the friezes, chapters on the style, the interpretation of the Heroon, and a catalogue, including description and technical information on the friezes, and bibliographical abbreviations. http://e-book.fwf.ac.at/o:874 The second part includes images, supplements, tables, lists of images http://e-book.fwf.ac.at/o:875

Abstract

Recent results from the most important sites of the Late Middle Kingdom and the Second Intermediate Period (Edfu, Tell el-Dab'a and Abydos) have broadened our knowledge of the situation in Egypt enormously. Of utmost importance in this context are the sealing impressions from Edfu and Tell el-Dab’a bearing the name of the Hyksos ruler Khyan and the discovery of the previously-unknown royal tombs of an independent „Abydene” Dynasty in Abydos, which bring new light to bear on our understanding of the political situation in this period.Besides King Apophis, Khyan is one of the most important kings of the 15th Dynasty. However, his chronological position within the 15th Dynasty is not clear. Traditionally he has been assigned to the middle of the 15th Dynasty, but recent results now indicate a dating at the beginning of the 15th Dynasty and an overlap between the 13th and the 15th Dynasty. This new chronological position has far-reaching consequences not only for Egyptian chronology, but also for the chronology of the Mediterranean world. The new finds from Tell el-Dab’a, Edfu and Abydos necessitate a revision of the chronology of Dynasties 13 to 17 in Egypt, and a reconsideration of political and administrative structures during the Second Intermediate Period. The discussions during the workshop were very positive, although a wide range of interpretations of the evidence still remain plausible, especially in respect of the chronological conclusions. These are reflected in the range of contributions to the volume. It is hoped that this publication will stimulate further discussion and research on this important topic.
