About

The National Thematic Alliance for the Human and Social Sciences (Alliance thématique nationale des sciences humaines et sociales, Athéna) is a forum for dialogue and strategic cooperation between universities and research bodies. It plays a role in developing France’s scientific positions at the international and European level (Horizon 2020, European Union framework programmes), as well as in national strategies and research programming exercises (National Research Agency/Agence nationale de la recherche, ANR; Investments for the Future programme (PIA), etc.). Bringing together the Atomic Energy Commission (Commissariat à l’énergie atomique, CEA), the Conference of Grandes Écoles (Conférence des grandes écoles, CGE), the Conference of University Presidents (Conférence des présidents d’université, CPU), the National Centre for Scientific Research (Centre national de la recherche scientifique, CNRS), the Institute of Research for Development (Institut de recherche pour le développement, IRD), the National Institute of Demographic Studies (Institut national d’études démographiques, Ined), the National Institute of Agronomic Research (Institut national de la recherche agronomique, Inra) and the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale, Inserm), the Alliance supports its members’ work in developing public policies, promoting an open vision of the human and social sciences (HSS), built on dialogue with scientific communities. Led by a board of directors comprising representatives of its member institutions, it is chaired alternately by the CPU and the CNRS. A general delegation oversees the coordination and implementation of its projects. The Alliance’s work is organized around three pillars: forecasting, coordination and transfer. In its forecasting capacity, Athéna works with a steering committee and several thematic groups led by preeminent scientists in the relevant fields. Coordination is centred on three joint initiatives involving its members:  the Observatory for the Human and Social Sciences (Observatoire des sciences humaines et sociales), which collates data and produces analyses on the state of research in HSS;  the National HSS Contact Point (PCN-SHS), in collaboration with the European Union and the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, to improve the presence of French research at the European level;  the networking of research infrastructures, to improve what have become major instruments for HSS research. Lastly, as part of its transfer and promotion work, the Alliance actively works to shift the position of HSS in society – in the eyes of both political leaders, by organizing specific events, and businesses, via its Thematic Valorization Consortium (Consortium de valorisation thématique, CVT), as well as for citizens, by supporting participative science.

Peer review info

Titles published in the Athéna series are the result of the forecasting work of the groups of the National Alliance for the Human and Social Sciences. These are made up of scientists and high-level experts on the precise topics entrusted to them. The research is steered and led by the Alliance’s board of directors, on which sit the heads of the main HSS research organizations in France, or their representatives: the CEA, CGE, CPU, CNRS, IRD, Ined, Inra and Inserm, as well the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH) and the Réseau National des Maisons des Sciences Humaines (RNMSH).

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

In the current European environment where the main orientations of research are being redefined, it is fit to reconsider the general principles underlying the Social Sciences & Humanities and their place in Science and Society. The need for a fruitful dialogue between sciences in order to cope with the major challenges of today’s world invites us to bring again to the fore the figure of ‘the engineer’ as largely open to humanities. Beyond any specifically scientific consideration, the SSH are addressing anew the question of the purpose of our societies and of the way they will evolve. This study is the result of an exceptional gathering of searchers and scholars. It aims at restoring the SSH back into their deserved position and at promoting male and female scientists dedicated to avoiding the frauds of technicism, dogmatism and scienticism.
