Peer review info

Review for Edited Volumes

All submitted manuscripts are subject to a review to ensure that they comply with the scientific and ethical requirements. Book chapter manuscripts are submitted to IntechOpen as contributions to Edited Volumes. All chapters undergo a main Editor peer-review. Academic Editors' chapters undergo external blind peer-review – the result is a fully peer-reviewed book.

Book chapters go through a two-step review process: chapter proposal review and full chapter review. The Academic Editor reviews all chapter proposals, decides which topics to focus on, suggests improvements and selects potential manuscripts with a high degree of relevance and bearing on developments within the field. Academic Editors have the overall responsibility for the content of the publication. Chapters that do not fall within the scope and topics of the book, are scientifically not sound, are incomplete, or of marginal interest to the field are rejected.

Once submitted, the Academic Editor(s) reviews the full chapters, too, by screening them for plagiarism, evaluating their scientific merit, and ultimately decides whether they are suitable for inclusion in the book or not.

During the review process the Academic Editor(s) suggest rounds of revision and authors work on improving their chapters. The Academic Editor(s) has/have the absolute possibility of accepting, requesting major or minor revisions, or rejecting the full chapter submissions at any point.

Review for Monographs

Each submitted manuscript undergoes a plagiarism check and enters a peer-review process afterward. Referees for monographs are external collaborators who agreed to contribute their own expertise in reviewing the submitted manuscript, independently and on a voluntary basis.

Abstract

Escherichia coli is a versatile organism and very diverse. Members of this species vary from very pathogenic agents causing different types of diseases including meningitis, gastroenteritis, and septicemia, just to cite a few, to harmless organisms living in the intestines of both humans and animals. E. coli has also been used as a model organism for most bacteria except a few. For this reason, its study provides a huge advantage and can help understand the mechanisms involved in different processes such as pathogenesis, environmental disinfection, nutrient utilization, antibiotic resistance, and diagnostic/detection methods, and these are indeed the topics discussed in this book. The book has been divided into four main sections representing the different facets of E. coli applications, which include disease, biotechnology, environmental engineering and innovative approaches to detection, and lastly its physiology and cell biology. Such processes can be applied to the study of other organisms as well considering the development of diversity; for example, many organisms are capable of horizontal gene transfer, which is capable of increasing the fitness of the bacterial organisms involved and has a great impact on the control of such bacterial organism.

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus strains are an important medical infectious agent that causes a wide range of pathogeneses starting from colonization of the skin and mucosal surface to severe pathogenic effects such as septicemia. The mortality and morbidity from this pathogen are challenging issues for the healthcare premises. Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains (MRSA) are causing severe infections due to the genes that are resistant to several antibiotics including methicillin, aminoglycosides, and others. Recently, there have been several reports related to failure of treatment plans caused by MRSA that led to Vancomycin Intermediate Staphylococcus aureus strains (VISA) or, in sporadic cases, resistance to the drug of choice. This book highlights the new areas for the treatment of MRSA using natural products. The implementation of specific products produced by this organism can help the scientist to obtain a new window for treatments such as anticancer chemotherapy, antioxidants, etc.

Abstract

This book, intended for all physicians who are facing patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms, has been assembled by interested, invited authors and contains important topics from basic research to clinical practice. Experimental studies focus on biomechanical and biochemical factors. In clinical practice, the decision to treat, based on risk-benefit ratio, is very delicate in patients with concomitant malignant diseases. Periprocedural risk is determined by anatomy, while aneurysms causing neck pain are one of the most frequent challenges for both open and endovascular methods. Finally, careful planning is crucial. Abstract

Plants, unlike animals, are sessile. This demands that adverse changes in their environment are quickly recognized, distinguished and responded to with suitable reactions. Drought, heat, cold and salinity are among the major abiotic stresses that adversely affect plant growth and productivity. In general, abiotic stress often causes a series of morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular changes that unfavorably affect plant growth, development and productivity. Drought, salinity, extreme temperatures (cold and heat) and oxidative stress are often interrelated; these conditions singularly or in combination induce cellular damage. To cope with abiotic stresses, of paramount significance is to understand plant responses to abiotic stresses that disturb the homeostatic equilibrium at cellular and molecular level in order to identify a common mechanism for multiple stress tolerance. This multi authored edited compilation attempts to put forth an all-inclusive biochemical and molecular picture in a systems approach wherein mechanism and adaptation aspects of abiotic stress are dealt with.
