Abstract

From its beginnings, the theory of evolution has unsettled fundamental anthropological assumptions about the place of human beings in nature. The integration of human origins into natural history by Darwinism was countered by the philosophical anthropologies of the 20th century. Their attempts were to hold on even more resolutely to the special status of humans as beings 'open towards the world'. Today, evolutionary and philosophical anthropology have moved closer together via the paradigm of embodiment. Building on embodied cognitive science, this volume aims to establish how far the human mind and human cultural cognition can be attributed to the structures of human existence, structures which have emerged in the course of evolution and have in turn been affected by culture. The traditional dualism of nature and culture is transformed into an explanation of an evolutionary process in which body and mind are understood to be intertwined and mutually constitutive.

Abstract

In the 'New Perspective on Paul' the last judgment does not play any decisive role. According to other Pauline scholars, Paul, in his many fragmentary references to a last judgment, did not presuppose a consistent conception of judgment, but instead used different and sometimes contradicting motives in different contexts. Christian Stettler counters these views from a cognitive semantic perspective. Since in frame semantics language is seen as an 'access point' to encyclopaedic cognitive concepts, the author argues that judgement texts are references to a more detailed concept of the last judgement that Paul presupposed in his letters and taught in his churches. Stettler offers a full reconstruction of this concept by a semantic analysis of all relevant passages and through more extensive interpretation of central texts. The result is a reading of Paul that offers a way forward both to New Perspective and traditional confessional readings.

Abstract

Despite established social, political and cultural differences, and despite the tricky mountainous setting, over 50 early modern era alpine valley communities managed to cooperate reliably with one another without either central instance or state. Notwithstanding these adverse conditions – such as steep mountains, remote valleys and settlements strewn far apart – they were able to successfully organise their common social and political interests. They even developed a dynamic unity and order completely without superior central power. This at first seemingly paradoxical finding is taken by Sandro Liniger as an opportunity to analyse just how such a dispersed society functions: Which specific logic characterises such an alternative form of organising common social and political life? Which instabilities and resistances are peculiar to it? And which conflicts characterise it?

Abstract

Is there a counter-imperial message beneath the surface of the text in Paul? Christoph Heilig analyzes the letters of the apostle and concludes that the hypothesis that we can identify critical »echoes« of the Roman Empire in Paul's letters needs to be modified for it to be maintained.
