Abstract

Racism as a historically grown power relation varies in its complex configurations, depending on social-political as well as local-historical contexts. This study examines how students deal with racism, with a particular focus on the contexts and institutions of academia. Due to the adaptive potential of current forms of racism, paradox spheres (of negotiation) open up to those affected by it: On the one hand, as academics, they are included, however, in a limited way, while on the other hand they remain excluded due to their ongoing experiences of being othered. The analyses show that the social and institutional handling of racism and experiences of racism are mostly tabooed or de-thematized. These structural circumstances fundamentally affect the students’ handling of racism.

Abstract

The ideology of purity-of-blood (limpieza de sangre) dividedearly modern Iberian society into two different classes: OldChristians and New Christians. New Christians, i.e. Conversos (converted Jews) and Moriscos (convertedMuslims), but also their offspring, were thought to be inferior Christians and always tending towards apostasy. At the turn of the 17th century an increased interest in bodily markers to proof the presumed inferiority of the so-called NewChristians can be observed. The book focusses on the question how the apologists of the purity-of-blood statutesused the idea of inherited bodily markers to promote agenealogical racism in early modern Iberia.

Abstract

Racist police checks are part of everyday life in Europe. They make it dramatically visible who is not considered a fellow citizen. While much of the dominance society finds this racist practice normal, more and more people are no longer prepared to accept it without resistance. The volume brings together scientific, artistic and activist contributions to the social backgrounds and modes of action of racial profiling and the possibilities of intersectional anti-racist resistance. The focus is on Switzerland, supplemented by perspectives from authors who are familiar with the German context.
