Abstract

„Gegenstücke“ examines science communication as a cultural, social, and epistemic practice that is shaped by its historical contexts as well as its material and medial conditions. It is focusing mainly on two popular science magazines, Bild der Wissenschaft and Scientific American, established in West Germany in 1964, and in New York in 1845 respectively. Both magazines and their relationship are part of a history of imitation and nationalization and thus an extremely complex example for processes of producing popular knowledge.

Abstract

In place of the entanglement of person and work that so strongly marks the artistic work of Andy Warhol, and settles it in the usual Pop Art context, Mèlanie-Chantal Deiss locates it within the cultural context of America's post-war period. Viewed from this perspective, Warhol's work - which tends to be classified as superficial and ahistorical – exhibits unexpectedly serious engagements with concerns of the 1950s and 1960s. Throughout his image series, expressive, somewhat ambivalent narrative strands from America's post-war period unfurl, which transmit a concrete image, as a kind of written historical document. Warhol's visualized narration ultimately culminates in a cultural critique, which treats America not just as a stage of images, but also as site of contemplation of a cultural imaginary, in which art can critically and productively intervene.

Abstract

Competent adult internet users voluntarily disclose vast amounts of personal data. As such disclosure can cause great harm, governments may feel that through minor interventions they can protect their citizens from disclosure that is not in the latters' best interest. However, such actions can infringe upon the rights of the users' and of the data collectors', and are only licit when justified. Neither the German nor the US government has the duty or the power to coerce the privacy choices of competent adult users for the sole purpose of protecting them against dangers caused by themselves. Instead, it is suggested that governments should focus on limiting specific harmful disclosure.
