Abstract

The treatise deals with the pre-history of the modern French novella, which has constituted a new paradigm of genre history within the field of short narrations since 1829. Contrary to claims that Mérimée's, Stendhal's, and Balzac's novellas have nothing in common with the narrative of the 18th and early 19th century, it is intended to demonstrate that the latter provides an arsenal for the renewal of the genre around 1830.A relatively stable consciousness concerning the genre, clearly differentiating between conte and nouvelle until the mid-1760, functions as starting point. This duality, however, starts slackening when the successful conte moral transcends into the field of the nouvelle - an event which robs the terms conte and nouvelle of their distinctiveness. Both of the two most popular themes of the conte moral, namely marital development and education, are realized in a couple of textual strategies which are - despite a change in social conditions - continuing up to the first two decades of the 19th century. This continuum usually involves distortion, parody, and afunctionality. Simultaneous to the transformations maintaining this system, the observer also traces transformations breaking those rules as seen in the works of Diderot, Mme de Staël, Sade, and Balzac, which makes it impossible to integrate their narrations into the harmonized ideology of the conte moral. The nouvelle receives further impulse from the "true story", which can be settled somewhere between journalistic information and literary fiction. It is a heterogeneous field of narrations sharing the reference to the reality external of literary fiction and the themes of the unexpected, the inexplicable, and the violation of the rules. The techniques, methods and themes developed by the narrative of the 18th century are endowed with new meaning by the French Revolution. Characteristic bundles of the modern novella are elaborated by the cooperation of several concepts - "the exotic and distance", "antithesis and paroxysm", "denouement and temporality, as well as "ambiguity and the secret" - creating a new synergy. The novella meets the growing need for texts mainly concerned with the creation of suspense by its accentuated temporality and its mode of reception aiming at fast consumption. The fantastic novella may be understood as an extreme variation of the modern novella based on the typical antithetical structure. The historical increase in the usage of supernatural elements in the field of short narratives indicates that dealing with the irrational evokes a development of frame stories displaying a more complex structure which equips the novelistic event itself with an amplified aesthetic component.

Abstract

Organization and profession - although they seem to contradict each other again and again in theory, in practice they are interlocked. For this reason, the author develops the theoretical construct of "organization-bound professionalism" in her work and relates it to the field of lifelong learning. The author proposes to grasp the social capacity to work in the pedagogical field in the social form of reflexively individualized professionalism and to focus on the structuring power of organization as a constitutional context of professionalism. It examined a four-year process of employee development in an educational institution for institutionalising competence-based forms of learning in continuing vocational education and training. Counselling and research were integrated, thus opening up the developmental process for a theory-generating reconstruction. Thus, it is assumed that organisation and professionalism are contingent within a socio-historical space of opportunity. Accordingly, plural concepts of what is understood by professionalism and organisation in theory and lived as the social reality of the educational institution are unfolded.

Abstract

Biographic narratives are shaped by many factors. The shape old people finally select for the retrospective view of their lives, is for example influenced by the current narrative situation, by the individual's perception of the past, or by the patterns of reconstruction. Using the example of 67 biographical narratives, the graduate thesis “Telling about life in the 20th Century” demonstrates, how cultural influences shape the practice of memory, and how narrative traditions ultimately decide on the form of autobiographical representation.

Abstract

Even in the 21st century, history textbooks are full of historical myths. This volume draws on cultural studies and history didactics to illuminate some of the myths contained in German Speking History Textbooks. The volume also reflects in depth upon the concept of ‘myth’ and proposes a definition that ties in to academic discourse on historical learning without denying the concept’s roots in cultural studies.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Ivan Bunin's high opinion of his narrative "Temnye allei" (Paris, 1946) was rarely shared. In the field of view of the readers was too often the erotic topic - the criticism affected an unbiased reception of the book, whose coherence was only occasionally perceived. Abridged editions reinforced this effect in the episode. The study considers the "Temnye allei" for the first time in the interaction of external conditions and artistic intention, taking into account all simultaneously created, partly unpublished tales. The focus is on determining the genre of the book on the basis of extra and intratextlichen links such as structure, style and the central themes of love, death and memory. While a glance at the eventful history of its origins allows conclusions to be drawn about the book's intended construction, the critical examination of the history of editions and receptions illuminates the most diverse problems of acceptance in the perception of the book as a short prose link - and as Bunin's masterpiece.

The volume’s main interest is the interconnectedness: The album has the innate abily to unify the most diverse subject areas. Representation, mobility, migration and memory, multiculturalism and the formation of communities, materiality and the culture of things, the discourse of friendship, family history, generational narratives, and transmedia experimentation in remolding genres and art forms all have a place in the album, as it can transform anything into one coherent aesthetic system.

Abstract

How were accounts of war told in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern era? The contributions to this volume pursue this question in an innovative way through the combination of historical and literary methodologies. With the aid of this interdisciplinary approach, the texts examine storytelling practices and strategies which dissolved genre barriers between factual and fictional texts, thereby expanding insights with regard to their presentation of experience. This volume is not only a pioneering work of cultural studies research, but also an example of successful and productive interdisciplinary collaboration.
