In recent Pauline research, the critical importance of implicit narratives for understanding the apostle’s Epistles gained importance. The study examines this in a critical analysis using narrative theory and text linguistics. Heilig’s text analysis lines out a new narratological approach to Pauline exegesis.

Because of their brevity and speed, text messages are often considered elliptical. This publication uses a Swiss German corpus of text messages to examine the validity of this assumption. It statistically analyzes pre-field and middle-field omissions as well as ellipsis of articles and prepositions. In addition, the authors examine whether newer technologies - such as the use of emojis in WhatsApp - influence elliptical structures.

Sprachtechnologische Standard-Werkzeuge stoßen in den Digital Humanities nicht selten an ihre Grenzen: die untersuchten Texte weichen in zentralen Eigenschaften von den gängigen Entwicklungsdaten ab, oder die zugrundeliegende Forschungsfrage erfordert Werkzeuge für spezielle Analyseaufgaben. Das Center for Reflected Text Analytics (CRETA) entwickelt und erprobt interdisziplinär Methoden, mit denen Werkzeuge und Algorithmen für die Textanalyse entlang der traditionellen fachspezifischen Fragestellungen und Vorgehensweisen angepasst und weiterentwickelt werden. Dabei werden diese Methoden wissenschaftstheoretisch und in ihrer Funktionsweise nachvollziehbar gemacht, um im Zusammenspiel mit Datenvisualisierung und Computerlinguistik durch die Anwenderinnen und Anwender reflektiert eingesetzt werden zu können. Der vorliegende Band führt in Einzelanalysen vor, wie eine interdisziplinär entwickelte und reflektierte Methodologie technische Möglichkeiten integrieren und alternative Blickwinkel auf den wissenschaftlichen Umgang mit Texten eröffnen kann. Er bietet so eine Einführung in den methodisch reflektierten algorithmischen Umgang mit literarischen und nicht-literarischen Texten.

In this work a model is engineered to depict topic relationships as graphs between detected topics of different time windows. By varying and shifting the time span of consideration the relationships between topics can be mapped with a variable complexity including the topic frequencies. Topic life cycles as well as changes in thematic relationships and their evolution become perceptible. Topics found can be matched in structure as well as their temporal progression to existing events.

Medical reports were a major element of medical communication as early as the 17th and 18th centuries. What characterizes such texts? Using a broad-based analytic model from the field of text linguistics, the author investigates specific classes of texts – consultations, court reports, and autopsy reports – in terms of their cultural and scientific history while also identifying their particular linguistic hallmarks.

Die Beiträge in diesem Band zeigen anhand detaillierter empirischer Analysen von Texten, die Wissenschaftler und Studierende verfasst haben, Merkmale und Unterschiede verschiedener Wissenschaftssprachen auf. Sie machen auf die Hürden und Schwierigkeiten aufmerksam, denen Studierende beim Verfassen von Arbeiten in der Fremdsprache Deutsch begegnen, woraus sich didaktische Implikationen ergeben. Berücksichtigt werden bislang teilweise weniger beachtete Herkunftssprachen wie das Polnische, Russische, Italienische und Chinesische.
