Abstract

This volume examines the loanwords found in 18 late-Byzantine histories and chronicles. In order to analyze the lexical interferences in the lexicon of late-Byzantine historical literature, all words were included (except place names and proper names) that substantiate language contact. The editors place special emphasis on the sociolinguistic context in which the loanwords were used.

Abstract

Abstract

At present, Macedonia is again increasingly present in the German-speaking media discourse, in particular due to the so-called "name dispute" with Greece. But what is it when we talk about Macedonia? The media representation of the region often remains diffuse and is strongly influenced by stereotypes. In his comprehensive analysis, Benjamin Langer shows for the first time how this south-eastern European region was shaped in German-language texts from a terra incognita on the periphery of Europe and provided with attributions. In ten thematic chapters, he shows how powerful these images are despite their contradictions and changing instrumentalization to this day.

Abstract

In recent years in the German-speaking world, the audiobook has gained in popularity and significance. One can scarcely imagine libraries and bookstores without them – and academic research is also showing a growing interest. At the same time, it is a phenomenon which needs to be outlined in more detail. As the word audiobook already implies, it is a multifaceted object, which not only addresses various senses at the same time, but also changes form depending on our vantage point. The essays in this volume focus on this polymorphic quality, at the interface of various disciplines.

Abstract

This comparative investigation is focused on the comparison of contents, themes, topics, motives, but also symbolism, stereotype situations, patterns of behavior etc. of sung and narrated oral text in South-east Europe. Great importance was given to bibliography, usually difficult to compile in a time-consuming process; a separate part at the end of the volume is dedicated to a bibliographie résonée, arranged according to countries and genres; this will facilitate further and more specific research in special fields of interest. This book offers for the first time a comparative survey of nearly all genres of the traditional oral folklore of Southeast Europe, independent from language, ethnic grouping, national boarders, religion and confessions; in this way the high degree of homogenity of the highly developed traditional oral culture in the historical Balkans is documented as well as the high numbers of variants and versions and the superb literary quality of these orally transmitted lingual manifestations, in some cases equal to the written literature of the region.

Abstract

For the first time, this comprehensive study deals with the entire reception of Schiller's works in all relevant Slavic literatures up to 1900. She concentrates on the translations of his poetry into the corresponding languages as well as the respective reactions to his work in scientific circles as well as in the wider literary public. Not least of all, it is taken into account to what extent the respective nationalistic journalistic statements on Schiller reflect an independent Slavic opinion formation or, in their dependence on foreign sources, possibly far more particularly reflect German or French judgments on his work. The presentation complements a detailed, more than 1,600 titles comprehensive bibliography of the transmissions of works Schiller in all Slavic languages until 1900.
