Abstract

In the German speaking world, questions concerning the voice or speaker of lyrical poems are often oversimplified through recourse to the disputed concept of “the lyrical I.” This volume addresses questions surrounding the expressive agent in lyric poems and thus contributes to the controversial debate about adequate forms for conceptualizing lyric poetry at the intersection between philological traditions and practices specific to lyric poetry.

Abstract

The present monograph focuses on the history of Italian literature and language in Austria's Habsburg past, covering the period from the Peace of Campoformido between Napoleon and Francis II in 1797 to the end of the Habsburg monarchy in 1918. The study reveals that Italian court poetry was amazingly alive in the 19th century as it gradually had been adapted to the changes in the fields of politics, society, and the press. After analyzing the end of the golden era of Italian poetry in Austria, the author presents Archduchess Maria Beatrice d'Este and her literary circle. She was the last patroness of Italian artists and poets and kept up the old-style tradition of court poetry until her death in 1829. During the 19th century, however, this tradition faced an ever increasing popularization, with Italian language books and instruction getting more and more common. The Italian language was never discriminated against in the Habsburg monarchy. On the contrary, it was even extensively taught at universities because officials with a good command of Italian were needed both in the federal government and in the Italian regions of the monarchy. Moreover, the Habsburgs' language policy favored the publication of quality papers and literary magazines in Italian. The study also deals with Italian school books and anthologies for schools in the Italian parts of the monarchy, which were usually written and published in Vienna. In the last part of this chapter, records of the future Emperor Franz Joseph's Italian instruction are presented and analyzed on the basis of archive materials. Anachronistically, court poetry survived the 1848/1849 revolution and continued until World War I. The Emperor was popularized in jubilee editions, newspapers, and ceremonies, but also in the Italian poetry which was no longer of high quality, but still instrumental in presenting Franz Joseph as the "father of the nation".

Abstract

For the first time, this comprehensive study deals with the entire reception of Schiller's works in all relevant Slavic literatures up to 1900. She concentrates on the translations of his poetry into the corresponding languages as well as the respective reactions to his work in scientific circles as well as in the wider literary public. Not least of all, it is taken into account to what extent the respective nationalistic journalistic statements on Schiller reflect an independent Slavic opinion formation or, in their dependence on foreign sources, possibly far more particularly reflect German or French judgments on his work. The presentation complements a detailed, more than 1,600 titles comprehensive bibliography of the transmissions of works Schiller in all Slavic languages until 1900.

Abstract

Displaying his characteristic balance between sympathy and detachment, Vickery has first provided a concise, but richly detailed account of Lermontov's brief and tragic life. His approach is above all sensible - down-to-earth and fair. Lermontov was a romantic, really the only Russian poet who fully fits that designation. Vickery understands very well the romantic ethos, but he is no romantic him self. He treats with tolerant but ironic amusement the adolescent posturing of Lermontov's early Byronism. He is less tolerant of the frequent arrogance and even cruelty in Lermontov's behavior toward those close to him, especially women. On the other hand, Vickery recognizes Lermontov's genuine longing for intimacy and affection and credits his capacity for friendship and generosity. He also effectively traces all these conflicting im pulses in Lermontov's poetry.

Abstract

Since ancient Greek-Latin and Judeo-Christian antiquity and also in a constant return to these two traditions the people of Europe have created a great treasure trove of poems. These poems have expressed and shaped the eras of their history. While myth, epic and novel have told the great stories of the world and of the gods, peoples and heroes, the poem created the ego-telling voice at an early age and thus enabled her to make herself heard and accentuated in the great and small events of the time; to try out feelings, attitudes, values and thus to prepare new mentalities. This division of labour between poem and narrative is always kept in view in the lectures of this book, because they use the now developed approaches of narrative research, narratology, to discover the special possibilities of poetry. Thus, one can see more clearly what role poems and songs play in the subjectivization of religion and love since the Reformation, how they promote the liberation of the individual in the Enlightenment, how they promote a new religion of nature and art, how they stimulate the nationalism of the 19th century and how to adopt new attitudes in the process of modern civilization with daring experiments. The specialist disciplines have distributed this common treasure among themselves and thus almost lost sight of it. The public lecture, however, has made it visible to those involved, always using the example and in a language accessible to all, which has been preserved in this book.

Abstract

Since the 19th century national epics have had an important function in the cultural scene of almost every nation, and the same is true for the Central and East European countries that have regained their independence after 1989. The programmatic national epic was brought to life by the German Romanticism, especially by writers such as Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The contributions in this volume analyse the development, relationship, and reception of European national epics. They rely on a wide concept of epic and offer studies on various texts, such as the Icelandic sagas, the „Nibelungenlied“, the „Poems of Ossian“, the „Kinder- und Hausmärchen“ of the Grimm brothers, Schiller’s „Wilhelm Tell“, Božena Němcová’s „Babička“, Esaias Tegnér’s verse epic „Frit(h)iofs saga“, the Finnish national epic „Kalevala“ and the Estonian national epic „Kalevipoeg“.

Abstract

In this work an attempt is made to describe formism in terms of Tytuz Czyżewski's poetry as an independent poetic approach. The starting point is the aesthetic writings on the visual art of Chwistek and Witkacy. On the basis of central ideas developed in them, the formistic can be made more recognizable and serve as a basis for the interpretation of Czyżewski's poems. Thus, their analysis deals with problems of a form-oriented art, the relationship between form and content in the literary work of art, and the relationship between art and extra-artistic reality, with which the formists' intention is to dissolve art or literature from their mimetic function and to emphasize the individual processing of the outer world by the artist. Such understood poetic formism stands for a thoroughly original literary approach, which apart from Expressionism and Futurism can be regarded as characteristic of the early Polish avant-garde. A comparison of formism with parallel currents of the Hungarian and Czech avant-garde completes this work.
