Abstract

This volume presents the current linguistic debate on the relationship between lexicon and grammar and on the status of constructions. It makes reference to investigations of phenomena relating to valence, argument structure, diatheses, collocations and phrasemes. Starting from different positions within linguistic theory, thecontributions also reflect the empirical methodologies currently applied to substantiate basic positions in linguistic theory.

Abstract

Abstract

"This textbook is an introduction to the descriptive grammar of German on the levels of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and graphemics. It is a recommended read for anyone interested in the grammar of German and especially for students of German philology. The book focuses on how grammatical generalizations are derived from concrete linguistic material while covering a huge number of the important phenomena of German grammar. No specific theoretical framework is adopted in the book but it constitutes an ideal starting point for reading more theory-specific textbooks and accessible research papers. Despite its length, the book is suitable for inclusion in all sorts of curricula, mostly because the five parts of the book can be read separately. Almost all chapters contain a large number of exercises, many of which come with solutions in the appendix. The second edition was prepared based to a large extent on reader feedback. It introduces numerous corrections and improvements. Most prominently, the chapter on phonology was completely rewritten so as to provide a better description of the relevant generalizations of German syllable structure."

Abstract

N.M. Karamzin's "Pis'ma russkogo putešestvennika" (hereinafter PRP) occupy a special place in the history of Russian language and literature. Since their publication as a continuation novel in "Moskovskiy Žurnal" from 1791-1792 (in the following MŽ 1) they are considered both the first realization of the "novyj slog" (new language / new style) as well as the beginning of Russian sentimentalism. Both assumptions are controversial. The present work should contribute to the clarification of contentious questions by providing a detailed description of the syntactic facts in the main work of Karamzin for the first time.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to integrate the West Slavic languages into grammar and language comparisons using modern grammatical approaches. This is done using the example of the imperative sentence in Slovak with a view to other West Slavic languages. This type of sentence is examined for its formal and content-related characteristics. At the same time, its communicative-pragmatic potential is derived and explained from the structural meaning of this mode verbi. The demarcation between the grammar and the pragmatics of the imperative theorem will play an important role here.

Abstract

The starting point of the work is an understanding of the theorem, also referring to Bachtin, as a "hybrid of sentence and utterance", of referential values and pragmatic embedding. This is connected with the view that language knowledge is made up of autonomous, innate (partial) competencies. and acquired skills, and these interact with other knowledge systems. Consequently, the demand is raised for a linguistic paradigm that is capable of meaningfully integrating inherited and learned knowledge. The author sees his work as a first, "certainly quite bumpy attempt (...) in this direction". Thus, this work joins the current attempt to transgress the rigid limits of a too generatively understood generativistic. Horst Dippong accomplishes this in his own way with an original work, which can not be attributed to any single linguistic school, and which deserves an interested and critical reception.

Abstract

Die Publikation ist einem vor allem in theoretischer Hinsicht schwierigen Bereich der russischen Grammatik gewidmet, nämlich der Frage, wie die grammatischen Kategorien Genus und Kasus im Russischen zu definieren sind, ohne daß der Verfasser dabei seinen Blick ausschließlich auf diese Sprache - oder die slawischen Sprachen allgemein - beschränkt.
