N.M. Karamzin's "Pis'ma russkogo putešestvennika" (hereinafter PRP) occupy a special place in the history of Russian language and literature. Since their publication as a continuation novel in "Moskovskiy Žurnal" from 1791-1792 (in the following MŽ 1) they are considered both the first realization of the "novyj slog" (new language / new style) as well as the beginning of Russian sentimentalism. Both assumptions are controversial. The present work should contribute to the clarification of contentious questions by providing a detailed description of the syntactic facts in the main work of Karamzin for the first time.

The aim of this work is to integrate the West Slavic languages into grammar and language comparisons using modern grammatical approaches. This is done using the example of the imperative sentence in Slovak with a view to other West Slavic languages. This type of sentence is examined for its formal and content-related characteristics. At the same time, its communicative-pragmatic potential is derived and explained from the structural meaning of this mode verbi. The demarcation between the grammar and the pragmatics of the imperative theorem will play an important role here.

The starting point of the work is an understanding of the theorem, also referring to Bachtin, as a "hybrid of sentence and utterance", of referential values and pragmatic embedding. This is connected with the view that language knowledge is made up of autonomous, innate (partial) competencies. and acquired skills, and these interact with other knowledge systems. Consequently, the demand is raised for a linguistic paradigm that is capable of meaningfully integrating inherited and learned knowledge. The author sees his work as a first, "certainly quite bumpy attempt (...) in this direction". Thus, this work joins the current attempt to transgress the rigid limits of a too generatively understood generativistic. Horst Dippong accomplishes this in his own way with an original work, which can not be attributed to any single linguistic school, and which deserves an interested and critical reception.

This volume presents a sampling of papers devoted to different phenomena of Polish (and theoretical) morphology and syntax. The focus of attention of the Authors of the present volume is concentrated mostly on questions of syntactic and morphological analysis of Modern Standard Polish with exception of W. Mańczak's and (in part) G. Hentschel's articles, which take the diachronic perspective.

Die Publikation ist einem vor allem in theoretischer Hinsicht schwierigen Bereich der russischen Grammatik gewidmet, nämlich der Frage, wie die grammatischen Kategorien Genus und Kasus im Russischen zu definieren sind, ohne daß der Verfasser dabei seinen Blick ausschließlich auf diese Sprache - oder die slawischen Sprachen allgemein - beschränkt.

The contributions included in the present volume cover a large number of various linguistic disciplines: the topics range from philosophy of language, pragmatics, semantics and syntax to morphology and phonology, and even language history, translation theory and quantitative linguistics figure among them. This astonishing abundance of different research objects and methods sheds some light on the universality of interests which characterize the scholar to whom this volume is dedicated.

Questions are communicatively on an equal footing with statements. However, while the greatest number of syntactic studies deal with formal and functional aspects of declarative sentences, so far only a handful of Slavic works have been devoted to the structural features of interrogative sentences in Slavic languages. The present work shows that - contrary to the first impression - there are many relevant subtle differences in the syntax and use of supplementary questions in Slavic languages, which have to be integrated into a theory of questioning. For reviewing generalizations that v. a. Developed in formal syntax descriptions, the author uses data from extensive corpora and individual interviews as well as collected acceptability judgments from controlled experimental studies. Specifically, the work deals with Russian, Polish and Czech with the position of question expressions in simple supplementary questions, the possibilities of sentence entanglement and the syntax of questions with multiple question expressions. In addition to the surface form, the contextual and communicative function of the structure types is also taken into account.
