The 19th century was, in Walter Benjamin’s diagnosis, “addicted to dwelling.” That era’s sense of space – what August Schmarsow called its Raumgefühl – shaped the narratives of Thomas Mann. This study examines Mann’s literary concepts of space and interprets them less in terms of particular texts than as descriptions of material culture. It also explores the discourse, history, and ideology behind those concepts.

What effect do spatial mobility and migrations have on the diffusion of knowledge? In this volume, papers dealing with the topic have been collected from various culture-historical and theoretical disciplines. Chronologically they range from non-literate cultures to an insight into contemporary research on economic innovation. Die Schweiz unterliegt seit zwei Jahrzehnten starken Urbanisierungstendenzen, die sich vor allem zwischen den großen Kernstädten abspielen. Um Herausforderungen des gesteigerten Flächenverbrauchs wie der Zersiedelung zu begegnen, ist eine Analyse der heutigen kommunalen Entscheidungsprozesse und -logiken überfällig. Lineo Umberto Devecchi thematisiert Fragen hinsichtlich der kommunalen Steuerung raumwirksamer Prozesse und deren Auswirkungen auf die Gestaltung des suburbanen Raums. Die theoretisch abgestützten Erklärungen sowie die nachvollziehbaren Fallstudien sind nicht nur für ein interdisziplinäres akademisches Publikum, sondern auch für Praktiker_innen aus Planung und Architektur von Interesse.

The purpose and subject of this dissertation is an analysis in space-representation and perspective drawing of Roman and Campanian landscape painting to develop and reconstruct the modes of landscape recognition and spatial perception structures in the late Republic and early Empire. This aim is realized with the help of interdisciplinary methods, as the possibilities, limits and developments of perspective representation are studied on the basis of descriptive geometry, its terminology and theoretical background.
