Abstract

With contributions by some of the leading Portuguese and Spanish speaking experts in the philosophy of J. G. Fichte (1762-1814), this book focuses mainly the relation between the universality of human reason postulated by transcendental philosophy, of which Fichte is the main representative between Kant and Husserl, and its translation into concrete political, historical and cultural forms. The collected texts include significant references to the entire Fichte’s work, extending from the Rectification of the Public's Judgment on the French Revolution of 1793, until the revaluation of the importance of the role of Religion and History in the Theory of State, of 1813; between those milestones, the collected studies consider both the classic of the rational theory of the State and Law, the Fundamentals of Natural Law of 1797, and the classic at the basis of German linguistic and cultural nationalism, the Adresses to the German Nation, of 1807. The relationship between Philosophy and Law, the rational foundation of the legitimacy of State power, the relationship between Morals and Law, Human History, Revolution, Christianity, war or despotism, are issues whose discussion at the dawn of the contemporary world marked our time indelibly.

Abstract

This work is divided into four sections discussing topics relating to the teaching of Geography, History, Modern Languages and Portuguese (language and literature), respectively. The volume brings together eighteen chapters of teaching teachers, researchers, trainee teachers and professionalized teachers, associated with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra. More than finding revenue for teachers in initial training, it is intended to raise the debate and provide a space for reflection on themes central to the teaching of humanities.

Abstract

By creating this comic, Living Science joins the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the expeditions to the island of Príncipe in São Tomé e Príncipe, and Sobral, in Brazil, which allowed proof of the theory of General Relativity previously predicted by Albert Einstein. This comic will be disseminated and distributed on a large scale and aims to the presentation of the theory of General Relativity, using language understandable throughout the public. In addition, it is intended that the general public be able to value the expeditions made to Island of Príncipe and Sobral by astronomers portrayed here.

Abstract

Throughout this book, an analysis is made of how History teaching is organized in what the International Standard Classification of Education standards call Secondary Education (ISCED 2 and 3), in four different European countries, in order to compare the importance given to History, the type of curriculum chosen and its place in the Secondary Education. In addition to Portugal, the other three countries (Spain, France and England) were chosen because of the historical relation each one has with Portugal. Considered fundamental in the integral formation of any young person and important for the development of critical thinking, it is possible to withdraw from the analysis carried out the idea that despite the importance that is notoriously given to this subject, there have been many debates regarding what to teach and also its general purpose in Education.

Abstract

Under the title ‘Parva Naturalia’ this Aristotelian text knew an unusual international diffusion; among all the Commentaries on the ‘Parva Naturalia’ stands the Coimbra Commentary (16th Century), written by Manuel de Góis, as a part of the widely known Jesuit Coimbra Commentaries. Indeed, they soon spread throughout European Universities and Colleges and even arrived to South American territories, as well as China, thanks to its several Chinese translations or adaptations published as soon as the 17th Century

Abstract

This work aims to promote a broad critical reflection on the birth and evolution of writing and of book publishing throughout the ages, highlighting the main supports and techniques, from the scroll of papyrus to the parchment codex, from the book on paper to the digital book. The articles in this volume deal with various themes concerning the History of the Book and the Publishing Industry from antiquity to present-day. They are the culmination of a project which is intended to be continued, thus renewing our attempt to disseminate the Arts of the Book.

Abstract

It sought to make the historical sketch of the legal regime of foundations, since the emergence of these in Rome, in the period of the principality, until our days. In this context, with reference to that first period, two modalities of the so-called non-autonomous private foundations were highlighted: food foundations and funerary foundations. The study of the Piæ Causae, which abated in the post-classical period and at the time Justinianeia, constituted the next step of our investigation. Then he continued his eyes on the Middle Ages. With the Reformation, first, and modern jusnaturalism, then the foundations lost their previous glow. And they actually ended up being convicted of some kind of legal clandestinity. It was necessary to wait for the last quarter of the 19th century to attend its definitive rehabilitation. Nevertheless, since then, and for about a century, the foundations were predominantly looked at, in the generality of the countries of the European continent, as remnants of ancient times, in which the idea of the social state failed. At one point, already in the last quarter of the 20th century, and like that all of a sudden, everything changed. The number of foundations grows exponentially, and other other than their typological diversification is being watched. Legislative interventions – such as modernisation or reform – are to be followed. The doctrine discovers the Institute and is in its study.

Abstract

The present collection of unpublished studies intends to open new paths in the area of financial and economic history of Portugal, during the 16th-18th centuries. Gathering a set of young researchers from various specialties, we sought to offer a window to the past through ten cases of study that, from the metropolis to the Beyond-Sea, from the financial management of the institutions to the structuring of commercial networks, the economic importance of the landlords, the Municipal Councils, the Merlums and the Inquisition, allow us to understand the centrality of economic structures and the construction of the kingdom in the modern period.

Abstract

Late classical author of Greek expression, Phlegon of Tralles was recognized for centuries, through his work. Most of the books of the emperor Hadrian's freedman are currently lost, with the exception of some fragments and sections of On Marvels, On Long-Lived Persons and the Olympiads. It could be just another legacy to add to so many others. However, the writing of Flégon is enriching, preserving oriental notes; the cultural assimilation undertaken by the Roman military dominators; the experience and the value of pagan traditional elements in a Judeo-Christian paradigm which in some cases demonstrates the misappropriation and misuse of some statements made by the Historian from Tralles. The themes can simply be understood as light issues of popular taste, marked by the exploration of grotesque and astonishing themes. However, a distinct exegesis will provide the elevation of Phlegon's opuscula, as enigmatic containers of social realities maintaining an up-to-date character.

Abstract
