Abstract

Abstract

At the Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra we can observe a collection of five geometric models, mounted on boxes or wooden brackets, in all analogous to the idealized by Théodore Olivier (1793-1853) to expose some of the contents of the descriptive geometry. Deprived of his first function of teaching support, the models of descriptive geometry continue to carry out the important mission of reminding us of an already distant past but we must not forget. This is also the main objective of this text, dedicated to the class of descriptive geometry of the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra and his collection of Olivier models.

Abstract

With contributions by some of the leading Portuguese and Spanish speaking experts in the philosophy of J. G. Fichte (1762-1814), this book focuses mainly the relation between the universality of human reason postulated by transcendental philosophy, of which Fichte is the main representative between Kant and Husserl, and its translation into concrete political, historical and cultural forms. The collected texts include significant references to the entire Fichte’s work, extending from the Rectification of the Public's Judgment on the French Revolution of 1793, until the revaluation of the importance of the role of Religion and History in the Theory of State, of 1813; between those milestones, the collected studies consider both the classic of the rational theory of the State and Law, the Fundamentals of Natural Law of 1797, and the classic at the basis of German linguistic and cultural nationalism, the Adresses to the German Nation, of 1807. The relationship between Philosophy and Law, the rational foundation of the legitimacy of State power, the relationship between Morals and Law, Human History, Revolution, Christianity, war or despotism, are issues whose discussion at the dawn of the contemporary world marked our time indelibly.

Abstract

Power neither exists nor stands without symbols. In a space where awareness of ethnic diversity is increasingly tending to revalue the dynamics of the traditional, it is not merely academic to provide a glimpse of the rich symbology elaborated by the different forms of organizing traditional power. This will also be one of the many concrete ways to "gather data to define and illustrate the cultural identity of peoples Bantu, of yesteryear and today," aim "Bantu International Center for Civilization", an organization recently created to study and preserve the cultural heritage common to Africa's Banta. Angola is a field particularly rich in cultural traditions of this kind. In its territory numerous principalities and families were developed in which the power exercised under varied forms of royalty. This diversity sought to account for the selection of exposed objects; In writing texts, however, it was not possible to go beyond the most representative groups: the Kongo (in particular the Woyo subgroup) and the Ovimbundu. Suffering from the vicissitudes of different African histories (pre-colonial, colonial, post-colonial) the symbols of power survived even when confined only to their ritual component. There was even an enlargement determined by the incorporation of acculturated symbols, namely religious ones (crucifix and rosary, among others). The different anthropological collections around the world are in some cases unique testimonies of this "show of power" that only disappeared in appearance as it is still very much alive inside. Some testimonies of these symbols were collected less than half a century ago (M. A. F. de Oliveira), others are reborn from an apparent state of lethargy taking on new expression (see in particular the growing claim of the role of women in the transformation of Angolan society and the female component of power in the tradition of Kongo – M. L. Rodrigues de Areia); still others manifest themselves in the consistent demand that the holders of power assume themselves as defenders of life and what conditions it - a clear reflection of the traditional concept of the charismatic chief (sacred royalty) to whom the fertility of the fields such as that of women was imputed. women, the occurrence of rain as the scourge of drought. The analysis of the testimonies of traditional royals, which are of the past, must not only raise, besides the inference of the symbolization mechanisms resulting from social structures, also from the past, the ever- present question of the "systems of power and the conditions of its formation and transformation" O. Houart ); on the one hand, they provide the evocation of a past that reaffirms itself as an element of cultural identity; on the other, they justify a new discourse on the exercise of power. [M. L. RODRIGUES DE AREIA]

Abstract

In this book we have chosen three thematic threads to go through the philosophical-theological thinking of Nicholas of Cusa and cross it with some motives of philosophical interrogation in this second decade of the twenty-first century: learned ignorance, language and dialogue. In learned ignorance lies a way of being in knowledge that deconstructs all certainties, but does not plunge us into skepticism. By language we say and say our appropriation of reality, a language that the thinker of the fifteenth century has always recognized as dynamic but also recognized in its fragility to adequately tell the truth and the world. If our way of inhabiting knowledge is learned ignorance and if the device we use to say it is language, then dialogue emerges as a space of thought, discourse and action: thought in dialogue, discourse in dialogue, action in dialogue become modes of realization of the project of a dialogical anthropology still today deeply present.

Abstract

It sought to make the historical sketch of the legal regime of foundations, since the emergence of these in Rome, in the period of the principality, until our days. In this context, with reference to that first period, two modalities of the so-called non-autonomous private foundations were highlighted: food foundations and funerary foundations. The study of the Piæ Causae, which abated in the post-classical period and at the time Justinianeia, constituted the next step of our investigation. Then he continued his eyes on the Middle Ages. With the Reformation, first, and modern jusnaturalism, then the foundations lost their previous glow. And they actually ended up being convicted of some kind of legal clandestinity. It was necessary to wait for the last quarter of the 19th century to attend its definitive rehabilitation. Nevertheless, since then, and for about a century, the foundations were predominantly looked at, in the generality of the countries of the European continent, as remnants of ancient times, in which the idea of the social state failed. At one point, already in the last quarter of the 20th century, and like that all of a sudden, everything changed. The number of foundations grows exponentially, and other other than their typological diversification is being watched. Legislative interventions – such as modernisation or reform – are to be followed. The doctrine discovers the Institute and is in its study.

Abstract

In this work we try to make an approach to the shared history between two brothers countries and not always friends such as Portugal and Spain and the atlantic projection that has presided over much of its historical evolution and is also an essential part of its contemporary foreign policy. A dialogue that also acquires different nuances, since the same concept of atlanticity has different connotations for Spain and Portugal. From these various perspectives, Spain and Portugal continue to have an important mission in the challenges in today's world as interlocutors and transmission belts between different global spaces. This historical evolution and the new challenges of the atlantic world are intended to be addressed in the texts of the authors presented to them in this dossier and that address very diverse historical periods from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. Facing the most diverse possible perspectives, whether political, geostrategic, economic, social and cultural.
