Abstract

The book brings together seven essays on Cicero written by specialists in the Author. The essays are grouped into two sections: the first one presents papers on Cicero’s works (the dialogues: Lucullus, De finibus, De oratore, De officiis); the papers in the second one discuss on both the early and late reception of Cicero (in Seneca, Petrarch and Erasmus). The authors are professors from Brazilian (Adriano Scatolin, Bianca Fanelli Morganti, Elaine Cristine Sartorelli, Sidney Calheiros de Lima), French (Carlos Lévy) and Italian universities (Aldo Setaioli, Ermanno Malaspina). The book avoids traditional biographical approach, which tends to take the works of Cicero as a reliable witness of political and family events, sometimes distrusts them as a distorted picture of public and private actors. The essays here assembled also avoid conceiving Cicero’s works as either the Author’s profession of faith in a philosophical doctrine, or a tendentious presentation of the theses of philosophical schools. Instead, the contributors adopt another interpretative key, so that, when analyzing a philosophical dialogue of Cicero, instead of seeking references to its historical moment, focus on its controversial aspects (due to the dispute between the schools of philosophy), rhetorical aspects (the amplifying devices through which the Author compares the strength of one thesis with the weakness of another), fictional aspects (including the description of the scene and the picture of the characters). Thus, it can be said that the book seeks a more appropriate approach to Cicero’s works, not taking them as mere source of historical knowledge, but considering their historicity, that is, the devices for discursive production of their own time.

Abstract

Comes from the 10th century the oldest codex with the treatise On the Sublime. For a long time attributed to Cassius Longinus (third century ), the text is now generally considered a first century work, written by an anonymous or a Dionysius Longinus whose life and work is unknown. Ignored, as it seems, in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the text came to meet its editio princeps only in 1554, in Basel and by the hand of Francesco Robortello. It was then successively edited and translated, first into Latin and later into several European languages, starting with the famous French version of Boileau that for a long time was the main source for the knowledge of the treatise in Europe. Peri Hypsous moves away from the stylistic approach of ancient rhetorical books and presents a definition of Sublime as a quality of discourse which produces in the hearers and readers not persuasion but wonder and ecstasy. It is precisely this idea of wonder and shudder that has inspired the works of Burke (A Philosophical Enquiry into the origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful, 1757) and Kant, by whose hands the treatise On the Sublime entered the history of Western Aesthetics.

Abstract

The treatise De esu carnium (On eating of flesh) came to us in the form of two logoi, with multiple lacunae, especially in the second logos. By recovering themes already developed by the Pythagorean doctrine, by Xenocrates, by Theophrastus or by the Stoics, Plutarch argues about the nature of living beings, within the scope of the relationship between man and animal. Like other treatises of the corpus plutarcheum, such as Bruta animalia ratione uti (The animals are rational), better known as Gryllus, or De sollertia animalium (On the intelligence of animals), the narrative is developed around questions related to the nature and psychology of animals, such as the possibility that virtue and reason exist in them. Plutarch defends the philanthropy and the generosity with which all living beings should be treated, thus opposing simple utilitarianism or the problematic principle of necessity. Being one of the zoological treatises, De esu carnium is also a rhetorical text, because Plutarch constructs, in opposition to the Stoics, an argumentative theory that supports the idea that eating meat is παρὰ φύσιν (‘against nature’).
