Abstract

The portrait collection of Emperor Francis I of Austria (1768-1835) is one of the rare examples of an aristocratic portrait collection that has been preserved. The aim of the study is to shed light on the history of this example of the Habsburgian culture of collecting and to reconstruct the development of the collection. The specific characteristic of the classification system is compared to other reconstructable collections of the 18th century like those of Prince Eugene of Savoy and of Louis Philippe I, King of the French.

Abstract

This is a volume of 12 studies on specific topics of theatre and drama history in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean. The scientific interest in the culture of this area during the unification process of Europe is increasing. Five of these studies are of comparative nature, seven focus on Greece and its European connections in the field of theatre and drama. The first part includes the following studies: "Typological structures of development in the theatre history of Southeastern Europe", "Comparative contributions to the traditional puppet theatre in the Balkan pensinsula", "Black-eye Karagöz and the history of shadow theatre in the Balkans under the Turkish rule", "The repraesentatio figurata of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple by Philippe des Mézières (Avignon 1372) and its supposed Cypriotic origin", and "Skenderbey in European and Balkan drama".The second part consists of the following studies: "The descensus ad inferos as nuclear scene of an inexistent Orthodox resurrection play", "Structures of reception of Early Modern Greek drama", "Religious baroque theatre during the processions of Corpus Christi on the Cyclades in the 17th century", "Religious festivals of the Baroque era on the islands of the Archipelagus under the Turkish rule (Capucins, Chios 1673)", "Greek editions in Vienna from Gluck to Kotzebue. The theatre life of the Danubian capital in Greek translations 1780-1820", "Literature and theatre in Greece 1728-1888", and "Constantin Christomanos and the theatre of fin de siècle in Austria and Greece".Comparative studies in South Eastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, especially in theatre and drama history, are very rare. Some of these studies are ground-breaking in specific subjects. Exhaustive registers will bring these studies together thematically, studies which in sum, together with the ones of the second volume, will give an idea of a future handbook on Southeatersn Europe theatre and drama from the Midde Ages up to the 20th century.

Abstract

Rudolf von Eitelberger (1817-1885) was a central actor within the emergence of numerous art historical institutions and initiatives in cultural politics and is known, among his other positions, as the first Professor of Art History at the University of Vienna, as the founding director of the Imperial Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry and its affiliated School of Applied Arts (1867).The 19 essays in this volume differentiate his influence, i.a. his art-theoretical attitude towards the aesthetics of autonomy and the academic education of artists, his architectural critical positions between research on the history of architecture and ideologically influenced style preferences, his cultural-political interventions within the Habsburg monarchy and in exchange with Prussia, his role in the bourgeois womens’ movement and so forth. These essays are supplemented by the first list of Eitelberger’s writings aiming at completeness, comprising nearly 600 positions, as well as a newly researched list of books formerly in Eitelberger’s collection, which are now preserved in the MAK library.

Abstract

The volume presents a collection of papers which clearly document a theological paradigm shift during the decades after World War II. Protestant, Catholic and Jewish experts from various specialist fields of theology, such as biblical scholarship (Old Testament and New Testament), liturgics, feminist and systematic theology, as well as Jewish studies provide a diverse picture of the theological change from anti-Jewish polemics to a respectful dialogue with Judaism. Moreover, the publication offers an insight into the biographical developments of the scholars involved, and through this a piece of reflective history of theology.
