Abstract

Roberto Pettorino was born in Naples on April 24, 1946. After graduating in Physics at the University of Naples Federico II in 1970, he later pursued research at Stanford's SLAC and Geneva's CERN. He was Full Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Faculty of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences at Federico II University, Dean of the Faculty from 2007 to 2012, President of the University Assessment Team since October 2012. Since the first Open Archive was created by Paul Ginsparg in 1991 at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL preprint archive, USA) for the elementary particle physics community, Roberto Pettorino was engaged in promoting Open Access. Since 2002, he had been delegated by the Rector of Naples Federico II for the libraries information services and member of the Scientific Technical Council of the Information Services Center; then he chaired the Permanent Commission for Libraries and Digital Resources. In 2002-2003 he promoted the development of the Digital Library of the University of Naples Federico II.Here are some contributions, collected to celebrate Roberto Pettorino's memory on April 8, 2013 when the Library Center was officially named after him.

Abstract

The stereotypical image of quiet, dusty rooms with hushing librarians does not ring true for contemporary research libraries. On the contrary, libraries are often at the forefront of technological development. As they open up to new activities and take on new responsibilities, patrons use libraries in new ways. Increased openness is a common denominator of these transitions. At the same time, there is an ambiguity attached to the celebration of “openness” as an indisputable good, an ambiguity resonating throughout this book.

Abstract

The implementation of open access policies in Europe is a socio-technical undertaking whereby a wide range of stakeholders work together to bring out the benefits of open access for European and global research. This work provides a unique overview of national awareness of open access in 32 European countries involving all EU member states and in addition, Norway, Iceland, Croatia, Switzerland and Turkey. It describes funder and institutional open access mandates in Europe and national strategies to introduce and implement them. An overview of the current European repository infrastructures is given, including institutional and disciplinary repositories, national repository networks, information portals and support networks. This work also outlines OpenAIREplus, a continuation project which aims to widen the scope of OpenAIRE by connecting publications to contextual information, such as research data and funding information. Opportunities for collaboration in order to achieve European and global synergies are also highlighted. The OpenAIRE project, a joint collaboration among 38 partners from 27 European countries, has built up a network of open repositories providing free online access to knowledge produced by researchers receiving grants from the European Commission or the European Research Council. It provides support structures for researchers, operates an electronic infrastructure and a portal to access all user-level services and works with several subject communities. Abstract

This study makes substantial contributions to both the theoretical and computational treatment of information structure, with a specific focus on creating natural language processing applications such as multilingual machine translation systems. The present study first provides cross-linguistic findings in regards to information structure meanings and markings. Building upon such findings, the current model represents information structure within the HPSG/MRS framework using Individual Constraints. The primary goal of the present study is to create a multilingual grammar model of information structure for the LinGO Grammar Matrix system. The present study explores the construction of a grammar library for creating customized grammar incorporating information structure and illustrates how the information structure-based model improves performance of transfer-based machine translation.

Abstract

The Neapolitan Society of Homeland History was created in 1875 through the will of some Neapolitan politicians and scholars, who borrowed its structure from previously established historical societies. Like the other Italian institutions, the Neapolitan association was also primarily interested in the publication of sources, the defense of autonomy, and the attempt to reconcile the smaller and the larger nation. The objective was twofold: to reinforce the ties between the local people and the Savoy dynasty, and to underline, through historical memory, the local contribution made to the process of nation building. Through the biographical reconstruction of some members of the Neapolitan historical society, it is well understood that nothing that happened in the city took place far from the institution; from the control of public instruction to the protection of monuments, to the administration of charity organizations. Although there were already some prestigious cultural associations, the historical society knew how to create a wide network of relationships, thanks to the policy of open membership and a fairly accessible membership fee. The events which took place at this institution, reconstructed here from its founding to 1946, through previously unpublished documentary sources and a full bibliography, are thus useful for those who wish to learn about the cultural dynamics of southern continental Italy and the period following the Unification.
