Abstract

Firmeninhaber berufen gerne andere Familienunternehmer als externe Mitglieder in ihre Beiräte. Aber welche Erwartungen verbinden sie mit dieser Berufung? Und wie zufrieden sind sie mit dem Ergebnis? In seiner Studie führt Otto W. Obermaier qualitative Interviews mit 59 Mitgliedern aus 19 Gremien bedeutender Firmen, die die beschriebene Konstellation aufwiesen. Seine Ergebnisse zeigen ein Spektrum von gegenseitigen Erwartungen, die unter anderem durch die Führungsstruktur des jeweiligen Unternehmens beeinflusst werden. Aus der weitgehend fehlenden Abklärung dieser Erwartungen können jedoch Konflikte resultieren, die die Zufriedenheit mit der Amtswahrnehmung beeinträchtigen. So ist das Zusammenwirken der beiden Familienunternehmer zwar per se nützlich, kann aber deutlich verbessert werden. Company owners like to recruit owners of other family businesses as external members to their advisory boards. What are the owners expectations and how satisfied are they with that recruitment? Findings were generated from qualitative interviews with 59 members of advisory boards of large German firms providing the staffing described above. The research results show a range of mutual expectations influenced by factors such as the governance structure of the relevant company. Significant lack of communication on those expectations may lead to conflicts between the players that diminish the satisfaction level on both sides. So the co-operation between the two owners is per se useful but can be improved considerably.

Abstract

This open access book examines the economic, social, and psychological consequences of manufacturing plant closure at the individual level. Using an original data set of over 1,200 workers from Switzerland who lost their manufacturing jobs after the financial crisis of 2008, the author analyzes the determinants of reemployment, the sector of reemployment, and the change in wages over a two year period. In addition, coverage also explores how plant closure affects the social relationship between a displaced worker and his or her significant other, which includes a discussion of the coping strategies on the household level as well as how changes in a worker's social and occupational life affects overall satisfaction. Readers will discover that the burden of structural change disproportionately falls on the shoulders of workers aged 55 and older who often face substantial barriers when trying to return to employment. A larger portion of this group experience long-term unemployment and those who do manage to find a new job often suffer disproportionate wage loss.This result is intriguing in the context of the current demographic change and contradicts the common assumption that young and low-qualified individuals are at greatest risk of unemployment. Advanced age—and not low education—appears to be the primary obstacle to workers finding job satisfaction after being laid off because of market conditions.

Abstract

This book addresses how organizations can deal with human fallibility in order to create space for excellence at work. Some mistakes in work settings put lives at risk, while others create openings for innovative breakthroughs. In order to deal constructively with fallibility, an organization needs a communication climate where it is normal to voice opinions, admit mistakes, and ask for help in critical situations. The book builds on interviews with practitioners in healthcare, aviation, IT, public governance, and industry. It connects narratives from these fields with theories from organizational psychology and philosophy, as well as from positive organizational scholarship. In the final chapter, an overall ethics of fallibility at work is outlined. Fallibility at Work contributes to research in multiple academic disciplines, but also reaches out to practitioners who are interested in the connections between error and excellence in organizations.

Abstract

"The health sector is a complex and dynamic conglomerate of services at local, regional and national levels. How to balance different considerations between new medical-professional knowledge, controlling expenses and local interests are among the permanent challenges facing political bodies when planning and structuring the services. The book is based upon institutionalist organisation theories, referring back to classic texts as well as present-day analyses. By taking a long-term perspective, and analysing one Norwegian county as a case study, the author addresses questions about how conflicts on hospital structure seemingly have been solved, and how the introduction of new management forms have changed the sector. One of the issues is how, in a 40 years’ perspective, different interest groups have seen their influence over health services and management forms have changed. In contrast to hypotheses that medical doctors would see their influence becoming reduced, the analyses show how medical actors, in an alliance with management consultants, have become more influential when innovations in health work and eventually organisation models are introduced. Regional political bodies and local community interests have lost much of their former role in restructuring processes. At the end of the book, the author makes some hypotheses about how health services will develop in the interface between ideas of a centralised, modern, high tech hospital model on one hand, and local and home based services on the other. These developments will in a nearby future most likely restructure the health sector once more. "

"This book is the first in a series of publications from the Department of Leadership and Organization at Høyskolen Kristiania. Through 12 chapters, we highlight leadership-related issues concerning, among other things, digitalization, employee empowerment, consulting, behavioral biology, mentoring programs, self-leadership, corporate health, trust, and workplace inclusion. The chapters include studies within the business arena, the public sector, sports and the media, touching on one or more key dimensions of the research field: • Good leadership takes into account that people are more than processes. • Good leadership rides on the realization that our scope of action is crucial to how we manage our work. • Good leadership reflects understanding the importance of the context in which people and organizations find themselves • Good leadership means being aware of the relationship between change and continuity On the one hand, the chapters explore themes, cases and concepts that bring the field of research forward, especially in the Norwegian context, with a diversity of theoretical, conceptual and empirical studies. Abstract

Applying the theoretical lens of organizational institutionalism, this study analyzes the spread of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the Austrian corporate world. The objectives are threefold: First, to explore the institutional framework in place; second, to explain the dissemination of CSR in terms of adopters’ characteristics and field-level pressures; and third, to understand the structuring dimensions of meaning within the CSR discourse. The findings demonstrate that a specific sub-population is more inclined to espouse commitment to CSR policies. Against the background of an ambiguous nature and definition of CSR, this study also shows how actor categories and divergent thematic embeddings serve as a basis for the concept’s theorization, and elaborates on a distinct constellation of empirical sub-discourses.

Abstract

Researchers, corporate leaders, and other stakeholders have shown increasing interest in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)—a company’s discretionary actions and policies that appear to advance societal well-being beyond its immediate financial interests and legal requirements. Spanning decades of research activity, the scholarly literature on CSR has been dominated by meso- and macro-level perspectives, such as studies within corporate strategy that examine relationships between firm-level indicators of social/environmental performance and corporate financial performance. In recent years, however, there has been an explosion of micro-oriented CSR research conducted at the individual-level of analysis, especially with respect to studies on how and why job seekers and employees perceive and react to CSR practices. This micro-level focus is reflected in 12 articles published in this edited volume as a research topic collection in Frontiers in Psychology (Organizational Psychology Specialty Section) titled “Corporate social responsibility and organizational psychology: Quid pro quo.”

Abstract

International public organizations, as the European Commission and the European Parliament, are under almost permanent political pressure to improve efficiency. While teamwork is considered to be a possible remedy, so far little research on effectiveness of multinational teams was undertaken in international public organizations. The purpose of this book is to identify the distinctive characteristics that influence multinational team performance in a public management context. Based on a qualitative research approach a complexity model of multinational team performance was developed. This model can be used as a checklist to identify possible problems in multinational teams. Additionally, managerial implications of how to deal with the inherent complexity of multinational teams are given.

Abstract

"The development and spread of self-help groups in Norway has been unlike that in other western countries. Public authorities, in collaboration with private sector volunteer resources, have created a national hybrid organization, Self-Help Norway (Selvhjelp Norge), to promote ‘self-help’ options. The introduction of combined groups, in which participants come together with a range of different problems or diagnoses, is also unusual. This book takes a closer look at the phenomenon of self-help in light of theories relating to group therapy, social movements, organizational sociology and welfare-state development. The individual chapters are based on the authors’ own research on self-help groups and the way they are organized in Norway. Our underlying point of departure is that self-help is in fact something quite different from the common public perception of a self-absorbed and ‘narcissistic’ activity that occurs at the expense of the community. Self-help groups have, rightly so, a focus on individual change and have recently gained a stronger psychological orientation. There is however a need for describing and analyzing the self-help group’s collective dimension, the reciprocal form of self-help that takes place in the context of the group. We analyze as well the growth of what we have called ‘the new self-help movement’ in the border zone between public and private sector and show how self-help has been established in various local societies as a form of social entrepreneurship. The movement’s breakthrough with the public sector is internationally unique, but it can also have come at a cost in the form of less legitimacy and relevance for the other self-help organizations. We pose questions about where these developments will lead."

Abstract

At the core of institutional theories, ‘values’ is a central term and figures in most definitions; however it remains understudied and under-explored. The editors of this open access book identify a resurgence of interest in the values-construct which underpins discussions of identity, ‘ethos’ and the purpose/nature of public and civic welfare provision. Considering the importance of values and values work to social, material and symbolic work in organizations, individual chapters explore values work as performed in organizations and by leaders. Focusing on practices of values work, the book applies and combines different theoretical lenses exemplified by the integration of institutional perspectives with micro-level perspectives and approaches.
