Abstract

How do spectators become emotionally involved in cinema? Starting from this question, the book suggests an original view about a critical period in United States film history. In a detailed analysis of individual films, an image emerges of a complex interplay between three affective modes – suspense, paranoia, and melancholy – which draw the spectators to reflect in unique ways about contradictions in their own feelings.

Abstract

The book explores the relationship of movement and music in film to study the aesthetic principles of audience affect. It begins by a reconstructive analysis and theoretical reflection on the rhythmicity of films – and goes on to show the extent to which the rhythmic dimension of audiovisual images offers access to intersubjective strategies to induce affect in the movie theater.

Abstract

Based on the premise that a society’s sense of commonality depends upon media practices of political communitarization, this study examines how Hollywood was deployed during the Second World War. It shows that Hollywood responded to the crisis of democracy in the war by creating a new genre. Using an affective theory of genre cinema, it offers a new characterization of the relationship between politics and poetics in forming commonality.

Abstract

How do cinematic images generate and transform a community’s affectively grounded sense of values? Using the feeling of guilt as an example, this study shows how modulation of moral sentiments can be described as the calculus of audiovisual staging techniques. This calculus is analyzed as a cultural practice that helps establish the conditions for political community and shapes its historicity.

Abstract

"The study of affect has become a dynamic field spanning a range of disciplines from psychology over neuroscience to philosophy and cultural studies. Little attention however has been payed to material culture. This book presents an innovative set of ethnographies of the affective relations between people and things. It tackles the sensual experiences of materiality, through taste, sounds, smells and touch that are hard to verbalize or represent in images. Evocative situations are detailed, like for instance the packing of a suitcase at the splitting of a marriage; how people in the besieged Sarajevo were both helped and humiliated by the aid received from abroad; how the parting of objects after the parents’ death may result in siblings never talking to one another again. These ethnographies from Scandinavia, the Balkans and the US, focus on what affects do in everyday life rather than what they are. The volume is also provided with chapters that put the studies of affects in ethnology and anthropology in a wider scholarly frame and discuss theories and methods applied in the book.Sensitive Objects in the first place addresses scholars and students in Ethnology, Anthropology, Sociology and Cultural Studies, as well as other readers interested in affects and emotions, material culture, tourism, innovations, and post-socialism.

Abstract

In this book Joshua Shepherd presents a systematic account of the value present within conscious experience. This account emphasizes not onlythe nature of consciousness, but also the importance of items withinexperience such as affect, valence, and the complex overall shape ofparticular valuable experiences. Shepherd also relates this account to difficultcases involving non-humans and humans with disorders of consciousness, arguing that the value of consciousness influences and partially explainsthe degree of moral status a being possesses, without fully determiningit. The upshot is a deeper understanding of both the moral importance ofphenomenal consciousness and its relations to moral status. This book will be of great interest to philosophers and students of ethics, bioethics, philosophy of psychology, philosophy of mind, and cognitivescience.

Abstract

All in the mix: class, race and school choice considers how parents choose secondary schools for their children and makes an important intervention into debates on school choice and education. The book examines how parents talk about race, religion and class – in the process of choosing. It also explores how parents’ own racialised and classed positions, as well as their experience of education, can shape the way they approach choosing schools. Based on in-depth interviews with parents from different classed and racialised backgrounds in three areas in and around Manchester, the book shows how discussions about school choice are shaped by the places in which the choices are made. It argues that careful consideration of choosing schools opens up a moment to explore the ways in which people imagine themselves, their children and others in social, relational space.

Abstract

Featuring essays from some of the most prominent voices in early medieval English studies, Dating Beowulf: studies in intimacy playfully redeploys the word ‘dating’, which usually heralds some of the most divisive critical impasses in the field, to provocatively phrase a set of new relationships with an Old English poem. This volume presents an argument for the relevance of the early Middle Ages to affect studies and vice versa, while offering a riposte to anti-feminist discourse and opening avenues for future work by specialists in the history of emotions, feminist criticism, literary theory, Old English literature, and medieval studies alike. To this end, the chapters embody a range of critical approaches, from queer theory to animal studies and ecocriticism to Actor-Network theory, all organized into clusters that articulate new modes of intimacy with the poem.

Abstract

Shit storms, hate speech or viral videos that promote clicking, linking, sharing: The linked society is driven by affects. The contributions included in this book examine the media-technological developments of our times and explore them from the perspective of a critical affect and social philosophy. They indicate that social media and digital platforms are not only spaces of exchange but also create affect economies – and therein lies their power. By creating new modalities of social interaction and therefore by determining the forms of articulation, they also change the political topography. Including a contribution by Antonio Negri.
