Abstract

Recent decades have witnessed profound shifts in the politics of medicine and the biological sciences. Members of several professions, including philosophers, lawyers and social scientists, now discuss and help regulate issues that were once left to doctors and scientists, in a form of outside involvement known as ‘bioethics’. The making of British bioethics provides the first in-depth study of the growing demand for this outside involvement in Britain, where bioethicists have become renowned and influential ‘ethics experts’. The book moves beyond existing histories, which often claim that bioethics arose in response to questions surrounding new procedures such as in vitro fertilisation. It shows instead that British bioethics emerged thanks to a dynamic interplay between changing sociopolitical concerns and the aims of specific professional groups and individuals. Highlighting this interplay has important implications for our understanding of how issues such as embryo experiments, animal research and assisted dying became high profile ‘bioethical’ concerns in late twentieth century Britain. And it also helps us appreciate how various individuals and groups intervened in and helped create the demand for bioethics, playing a major role in their transformation into ‘ethics experts’.

The making of British bioethics draws on a wide range of materials, including government archives, popular sources, professional journals, and original interviews with bioethicists and politicians. It is clearly written and will appeal to historians of medicine and science, general historians, bioethicists, and anyone interested in what the emergence of bioethics means for our notions of health, illness and morality.

Abstract

Medical reports were a major element of medical communication as early as the 17th and 18th centuries. What characterizes such texts? Using a broad-based analytic model from the field of text linguistics, the author investigates specific classes of texts – consultations, court reports, and autopsy reports – in terms of their cultural and scientific history while also identifying their particular linguistic hallmarks.

Abstract

This book shows how vitamin A deficiency – before the vitamin was known to scientists – affected millions of people throughout history. It is a story of sailors and soldiers, penniless mothers, orphaned infants, and young children left susceptible to blindness and fatal infections. We also glimpse the fortunate ones who, with ample vitamin A-rich food, escaped this elusive stalker. Why were people going blind and dying? To unravel this puzzle, scientists around the world competed over the course of a century. Their persistent efforts led to the identification of vitamin A and its essential role in health. As a primary focus of today’s international public health efforts, vitamin A has saved hundreds of thousands of lives. But, we discover, they could save many more were it not for obstacles erected by political and ideological zealots who lack a historical perspective of the problem.

Abstract

This book presents the semidiplomatic and interpretive issues of the most extensive work which houses the codex 142 of the Arquivo Distrital de Braga, corresponding to its second part, which starts calling itself Remedios varios, e Receitas Approvadas, but also includes, for the end, a copy of the well known and ancient calendaries, or fastos, distributing for each month of the year the recommendations about what to do for the maintenance of the good health, on the one hand, and about the agriculture of each month, of the other, and yet a long line of Several Secrets, with domestic revenues and advice, culinary, agricultural, veterinary, botanical, technic, and even magic and religious (healing prayers, etc.). Conceived as a treaty, it shows the collection of numerous natural remedies, from antiquity to the seventeenth century, mostly dependent on herbs, medicinal plants and trees, available to any person, and even more exotic products such as spices, or swallow nests, that the Discoveries put within reach of Europe by the Portuguese, originating both in Asia and in Africa or in Brazil. Organized by disease or also either by body parts, medicinal herbs and other ingredients, the manuscript highlights a prevalently preventive medicine and is not limited reductively to therapeutic medicine. In all the codex, and in many of the remedies, diet is key, and this is not a restrictive diet for patients, but of very specific and abundant dietary recommendations to maintain health in a much more timely and holistic perspective. The reader may find constant and rich cross-references between this part II of Codex 142 of remedies, the first part, of cooking recipes, already edited, and the third, about agriculture, with valuable and unique recipes and recommendations from de fields of agriculture, pecuary, veterinary and ecological animal husbandry. Despite the specificity of each part, the information, thorough and from a knowledgeable hand, reveals itself through the three notebooks repeated under different facets, complementary, forming an essential triptych to life: nourishment, health, agricultural and veterinary activity in perfect balance with nature and man.

Abstract

From the height of colonialism in the mid-nineteenth century, through to the aftermath of the Second World War, nurses have been at the heart of colonial projects. They were ideally placed to insinuate the ‘improving’ culture of their employers into the local communities they served, and travelled in droves to far-flung parts of the globe to serve their country. Issues of gender, class and race permeate this book, as the complex relationships between nurses, their medical colleagues, governments and the populations they nursed are examined in detail, using case studies which draw on exciting new sources. Many of the chapters are based on first-hand accounts of nurses and reveal that not all were motivated by patriotic vigour or altruism, but went out in search of adventure. The book will be an essential read for colonial historians, as well as historians of gender and ethnicity.

Abstract

Abstract

How did the Swiss organ donation crisis come about? Despite reforms and advertising campaigns, from the late '80s, Swiss transplant medicine began to lament an increasing mistrust in organ donation and falling donor numbers. Simon Hofmann throws light on the role of doctors, nurses, family members and donees, but also of the media, politicians and the pharmaceutical industry. In doing so, he draws out the relations between hospital practices, public debates, and fictitious narratives about organ smuggling. He tells a complex and contradictory story of modern biomedicine at the edge of life and death, which is shaped as much by economic calculations as by utopian hope and traumatic fears.
