Abstract

As an interdisciplinary field of study, higher education research is still underdeveloped in terms of theoretical matureness and rigour. This book offers perspectives on how a range of methodological choices, theoretical approaches and conceptualisations from other disciplines can be successfully applied and utilised in the context of higher education. As a reader compiled of independent chapters, the book is particularly aimed at PhD students in the field of higher education administration. The book consists of three parts: I Methodological Approaches – examples for early career researchers; II Conceptual Approaches Utilised to Understanding University Transformation; and, III Scholarly Traditions Applied to Understand Universities and Academic Work. The first part highlights the importance of methods in research, and provides examples of academic dissertations with strong methodological groundings. In the second part, the authors provide theoretical and conceptual aids to analyse the transformation of higher education. The third part focuses on how traditional and well-established theoretical approaches can be applied to higher education settings in terms of, for example, research questions.&#xD;

Abstract

This book links to another book also published by IUC aiming to constitute two sides of the same coin. Having a different scope, both result from the same research project centered on the theme of integrity and academic fraud and they balance each other. In this book we gathered some of the texts that supported the interventions made by their authors in the final conference of the research project, which took place at the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra on 8 and 9 May 2014. These are authors whose reflections were very important for the design and development of the project. Some of them took the external consultants function and its contribution extends far beyond the reflections they wrote here. This is a highly theoretical work, unlike the other book (which organizes the empirical results achieved under the project, related to academic fraud committed by students in Portugal). Integrity and academic fraud and its variants and dimensions; its causes and consequences; obstacles and solutions inherent to his combat; the actors involved and the contexts of their occurrence are, among others, targets of conceptualization, scrutiny and discussion. Discussion is also expressed by the publication, in a conversational tone, of the debates occurred among the participants over the two days of the symposium.

Este libro cierra el tracto que se inició, en octubre de 2002 con la investidura como doctor honoris causa del profesor Mariano Peset. El hecho de que la historia de las universidades haya sido una línea ininterrumpida a lo largo de su investigación y el que hayamos tratado de materializar sus enseñanzas de tantos años en el Instituto Antonio de Nebrija de Estudios sobre la Universidad explican que le hayamos dedicado este homenaje científico en un seminario que tuvo lugar en el campus de Colmenarejo de la Universidad Carlos III durante los días 22 y 23 de septiembre de 2003. Quisimos que el encuentro científico tuviera carácter monográfico, para centrar el interés de nuestro encuentro y evitar la dispersión de los discursos. Y pensamos que tratar de la enseñanza del derecho en el siglo XX era un buen tema por varias razones, entre las que subrayo dos: porque la centuria pasada ya puede ser tratada históricamente y, sobre todo, para continuar la labor de Mariano Peset que, en su día, hizo lo propio para el siglo XIX, con incursiones también en el que nos ocupa en este libro.

Abstract

The modern university can trace its roots to Kant's call for enlightened self-determination, with education aiming to produce an informed and responsible body of citizens. As the university evolved, specialized areas of investigation emerged, enabling ever more precise research and increasingly nuanced arguments. In recent decades, however, challenges to the hegemony of disciplines have arisen, partly in response to a perceived need for the university to focus greater energy on its public vocation—teaching and the dissemination of knowledge.Valences of Interdisciplinarity presents essays by an international array of scholars committed to enhancing our understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and the practical realities of interdisciplinary teaching and research. What is, and what should be, motivating our reflections on (and practice of) approaches that transcend the conventional boundaries of discipline? And in adopting such transdisciplinary approaches, how do we safeguard critical methods and academic rigour? Abstract

The book uses a comparative study of Germany and Britain to reveal how national institutions shape the labour market careers of higher education graduates. It identifies four institutional spheres that are important: the structure of higher education systems, the content of study, the structure of graduate labour markets, and labour market flexibility. Due to country differences, the transition from higher education to work in Germany follows a smooth path, while in Britain it is more comparable to a long and winding road.&#xD;

Abstract

Life chances today are increasingly determined by school, vocational, university and further education. Abstract

By 2020, half of the world’s population and most university students will have a supercomputer in their pockets. This revolution will affect the way students respond to higher education. The university classroom must henceforth engage students, and the classic lecture format alone might not be enough to do so. This book answers the question how university students can learn in the classroom what they cannot learn in any other way.The answer is inspired by options that are not available to political scientists – in the way that they are in the laboratories for the sciences, in the performances for the live arts, and in the studios for visual arts – as well as ideas that are already present, but not widespread in the discipline: problem-solving and case studies, as in the professional schools, and simulation exercises in many other disciplines. This book proposes therefore an active pedagogy for political science, at a time when active pedagogy is more important than ever.
