Abstract

Cittadinanze offers a new perspective on the history of the State, understood in the aristotelian sense as the whole of its citizens. The volume contains twelve essays dedicated to the possible ways in which citizenship took shape during the contemporary age, analyzing the various historical concretions. Not a single, but a plural citizenship, an object and an epistemological instrument of many declinations - institutional, theoretical-political, juridical, philosophical. A reconstruction conducted through different places and times, ranging from the French and American revolutions to the immateriality of the digital divide. An original exam that interrogates the stories, practices and symbols that have linked individuals to their political communities.

Abstract

Using recent research on development projects around the world, this book argues that culture has become an explicit tool and framework for development discourse and practice. Providing a theoretical and empirically informed critique, this informative book includes conceptual overviews and case studies on topics such as: development for indigenous people natural resource management social capital and global markets for Third World music post-apartheid South Africa cultural difference in the USA’s late capitalism. The editor concludes by evaluating the outcomes of development’s ‘cultural turn’, proposing a framework for future work in this field. By combining case studies from both ‘Third World’ and ‘First World’ countries, the book, ideal for those in the fields of geography, culture and development studies, raises innovative questions about the ‘transferability’ of notions of culture across the world, and the types of actors involved.

Abstract

The issues facing humanity have become increasingly complex due to the fact they are embedded in a global web of ecological, economic, social, cultural and political processes that are dynamically interlinked. The capacity to conceptualise and redesign solutions, in systems and sustainability terms, will increasingly be what society and employers expect. This “expectation” is globally one of the biggest challenges for education. This Special Issue highlights key developments in the area of systems education and how some of the many challenges are currently being addressed. The 15 articles published fall into five groups: how to design learning systems for systems thinking and sustainability education; insights from the various systems education programs available internationally; different approaches to teaching systems thinking and sustainability; how systems education can be tailored to broaden systems education beyond universities; and possible future pathways for systems education for a sustainable planet. The range and magnitude of the contributions to this book illustrate the diversity of systems education practices and programs (learning systems) in the global systems community, and the relevance of systems thinking and practice to examining issues crucial to the long-term sustainability of the planet.

Abstract

Heinrich Leopold´s study of the relationship between globalisation and integral thinking forges a link between Jean Gebser´s structural model of intellectual thought and current arenas of globalisation. It takes a carefully chosen approach to analysing various forms of globalisation from the point of view of social and individual consicousness. Jean Gebser´s philosophy, which owes much to a world view informed by far eastern philosophy, describes the history of human pereption in terms of a sequence of qualitatively different structures and demonstrates the emergence of a new structure of perception, which he describes as integral. This approach enables Heinrich Leopold to take into account the relevant in-depth analyses of globalisation while at the same time highlightning the divergent attitudes of those who welcome it as well as of those who condemn it, and offering of both. Irrespective of the extent to which globalisation has taken hold and no matter how much the western world have benefited from its undeniable technical, economic and communicative advantages, it is nevertheless a phenomenon tinged with the prospect of unpredictable danger and impending catastrophe. Globalisation is often seen as a powerful means of dividing the world into rich and poor. At present, we lack necessary perceptual tools by which to grasp the fundamental impact of globalisation on our way of life - let alone the tools by which to deal with it.This study goes one step further in that, very much in the spirit of Gebser´s concept of integration, it tracks down new approaches within emerging developments and defines them more precisely in terms of human perception, by way of selected examples. In other words, the study examines the applicability and usefulness of Jean Gebser´s structural models. The result is a firm basis on which to build a deeper understanding of the overall phenomenon of globalisation. This understanding can give rise to a new political mode of action that overcomes the prevailing sense of impotence and helplessness.Heinrich Leopold´s treatise is based on the notion that Kant´s ideal of eternal peace and Aurobindo´s concept of human unity have to be reassessed and redefined in this age of globalisation. In this context, Jean Gebser´s structural model and his descriptions of the integral provide an opportunity for us, in our time, to undertake a sober appraisal of the circumstances while at the same time gainging new insights into the discourse on globalisation.

Abstract

In this book, conventional and new methods through which sustainability can be promoted in mathematics and science subjects are described and discussed. The aim of the book is to support teachers and teacher educators in their work, and to create a multi-sided view on sustainability, and on education for sustainable development. Curriculums and teaching approaches for the implementation of sustainability in schools and universities, especially in teacher education, are discussed. The pedagocical studies presented give useful examples of how sustainability can be included in mathematics, physics and biology education. The described teaching methods are discussed also in relation to students' competence and learning outcomes. In addition, valuable ideas are presented for the development of curriculums and teaching practices in higher education and schools. The book is suited for all teachers and researchers who are interested in sustainability and sustainable development, and want to develop their teaching in higher education and schools.

Abstract

The history of systems theory does not start with the rise of cybernetics in the post-war 20th century. It rather took off in the late 19th century's now largely forgotten organismic sociology. Authors like Talcott Parsons or Niklas Luhmann can't, however, be reduced solely to a single line of descent. Julian Bauer outlines the plural origins of systemic ideas by portraying their broad foundation in different strands of holist thinking and thus provincialises systems theory. His book charts the intellectual and visual culture of systems thinking between 1880 and 1980.

Abstract

Jésabel Robin has been a lecturer in French for future primary-school teachers at the German-speaking Pädagogische Hochschule Bern (PH IVP) since 2007. She felt that most of her students were reluctant to their professional training in French, yet it is one of the subjects they are training to teach. Her research in language and culture pedagogy adopts social anthropological approaches with a view to study the attitude of the PH IVP students towards French. From mobility mapping to comprehensive interviews in self confrontation, she analyses diverse self-narratives and reveals a wide range of individual and collective representations of and about French. She also focuses on the pivotal effect of institutional experiences such as practical training in teaching French and mobility. These constraints trigger tensions between institutional thinking and individual experiences regarding French but also reveal gaps (so-called « interstices institutionnels ») within the institution itself. The author eventually suggests redesigning a few curricular aspects.

Abstract

Current efforts to limit the ravages of schistosomiasis are pushing the world closer to eliminating a chronic infection that has been associated with human life in the tropics since time immemorial. This notwithstanding, the disease remains a scourge for large populations in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, and the main part of this book is made up by papers dealing with its current distribution, discussing ways and means to establish and implement improved control approaches. While chemotherapy limits the symptoms caused by schistosomiasis, the number of infected people will not decrease until the parasite's life cycle is interrupted. To that end, some papers focus on the intermediate snail host, which is notoriously difficult to control, while others discuss human hygiene and sanitation. The latter approach not only prevents infection through avoiding people being infected from the snail, but more importantly, also stops people infecting the snail by leaving contagious feces and urine in nature. With morbidity reduced by chemotherapy, the immediate target now is the interruption of transmission to be achieved by new tools, such as the novel chemotherapies, improved diagnostics (for humans, animals, and snails), and vaccines discussed in several of the papers. As made clear in this book, a complex infection requires new tools as well as work on many fronts, above all; however, a clear idea is needed as to how to skillfully combine the tools available and sustain implemented control activities.
