Abstract

The Swiss vocational education and training model is at the heart of an unprecedented enthusiasm. Both in Switzerland and abroad, it is praised for its management based on a public-private partnership, for its ability to integrate a large number of young people in beyond mandatory education and, finally, for the quality of the training provided which is in line with the labour market needs. However, these assets may hide the high complexity of this model and the challenges it currently faces and will face in the future. Gathering thirteen chapters from specialists, this book offers a close look at the Swiss vocational education and training model. It provides the factual information and the theoretical tools necessary to understand its complexity and identify its major challenges.

Abstract

How do teachers read Voltaire's Candide and The Pennac rifle fairy with 16 year-old students? Beyond the different effects related to the length and status of texts, this book shows that teachers use school activities to read literary texts and ensure links with the readings of the students.

Abstract

Abstract

The rebirth of Ancient Greek in Europe was promoted by Humanist education and ideas to such an extent that we can consider the Greek language as a formative element of Humanist culture. Next to Latin, the default common language, a Humanist has to know and use Greek, because he is not, cannot and will not be a barbarian: barbaros ou pelomai, as Julius Caesar Scaliger claimed in his verses in 1600. Wreaths (stephanoi) have been the symbols of the cult of Muses from ancient times. After the love for Greek Muses had been revived by Renaissance Humanist poets and scholars, it has remained with us both in poetic activity and in scholarship. The Hellenostephanos volume presents a collection of papers by scholars who study Humanist Greek, aspiring towards another revival of Hellenism, and trying to avoid being barbarians. The volume includes papers by Christian Gastgeber, Gita Bērziņa, Janika Päll, Charalampos Minaoglou, Erkki Sironen, Kaspar Kolk, Tua Korhonen, Johanna Akujärvi, Bartosz Awianowicz, Jean-Marie Flamand, Walther Ludwig, Alessandra Lukinovich, Martin Steinrück, Tomas Veteikis, Grigory Vorobyev, Vlado Rezar, Pieta van Beek, and Antoine Haaker.

Abstract

In the last few decades, the organization of religious education classes in Swiss public school has been the object of profound public scrutiny. In the wake of these debates, most cantons have introduced a new course under the responsibility of the State in which a plurality of religions is presented. The attribution of this new competence to the State has prompted the reaction of various religious communities and has stimulated, within these communities, a reflection on their social role. Drawing on forty in-depth interviews with representatives of different religious communities, this study analyzes the strategies used by religious actors to position themselves in the public sphere. Against this backdrop, the study discusses the evolution of the relationships between religious communities and society and puts forward new perspectives in the sociological debate on the public presence of religion.

Abstract

What makes young people want to learn, commit and become involved in an activity? This issue is of particular interest to teachers, but also to employers. In order to provide some answers, the authors of this book are interested in a specific population: young people aged 16 to 25 who have freely chosen to get involved in associations as varied as sport, politics, the environment, humanitarian work or events. Based on interviews, this study traces the volunteer careers of some forty young women and men from all social categories. They proudly recall the responsibilities that were entrusted to them very early on in a structured, flexible and benevolent associative world. Their testimonies help to highlight the many learning and skills that the volunteer experience has enabled them to develop.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

On November 20, 1989, the United Nations General Assembly ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child. How is the evolution of the socio-legal status of the child that resulted in this Convention understood as well as the attitudes and strategies of stakeholders during the twentieth century? Through this book, Zoe Moody fills an important gap in the study of chil-dren's rights by analyzing for the first time the processes of genesis, institu-tionalization, and distribution of treaties on children's rights from a historical and transnational perspective.
