Abstract

As noted by Pierre Nora (1989, p. 17), ‘no-oneknows what the past will bemade of next’. While this is indeed so, it is also the case that the past will surelybe ‘made’ somehow. In this chapter, we take a look at those makings and theubiquitous desire to recreate what once was that arguably undergirds almost anyheritage practice.

Abstract

Traditional arts practices and festivals have attracted increasing and diverseattention in the European context since policymakers discovered ‘culture’ as aresource in the 1980s (see, e.g., Kilday 1998 ). Their impact on their respectivecommunities of practice, modes of production and exchange value in contemporaryEuropean society is under the spotlight from various angles within thenewly emerged fi eld of ‘festival studies’, which is deeply connected to policyissues (Frost 2016 ). However, much of this interest is instrumentally concernedwith revenue potential, leaving key concepts, such as heritage, identity andindeed Europe, defi ned in rather vague and often contradictory terms (Kockel,Nic Craith and Frykman 2012 ; Logan, Kockel and Nic Craith 2015 ; K ø lvraa2016 ; L ä hdesm ä ki 2016 ; Whitehead and Bozo ğ lu 2017 ). Moreover, the numberand range of events labelled as ‘festival’ is growing (Frost 2016 : 569), requiringa broader perspective on performances of heritage and identity.

Abstract

Polis/Cosmopolis publishes the results of research, arising from diverse perspectives, into the coexistence, in tension or in harmony, of regional and global identities, minorities, and majorities in the Graeco-Roman world, in the Middle Ages, and in the Renaissance. This work will explore the ways in which these cultural modalities were shaped, and transformed themselves, involving the polis system, the phenomenon of colonization, the hegemonic leagues, and Athens, both ideally imagined and historically beset with instability and lost values (as attested by its leading men). Our investigations also envision the Other, and consider the variety of political dispensations for the Other down to the Hellenistic kingdoms with, naturally, Alexandria first and foremost. There then follows the evolution that leads from Rome to a linguistic Romanitas and from Europe to the New World. Indeed, for a long time, local languages and the language of imperium coexisted as affirmations of regional identity and global integration, as was the case in the Hellenistic East as well as, in fact, in Hispania.

Abstract

This book examines how different agents and institutions within the Danish nation state have situated themselves within this complex landscape of competing appropriations of classical antiquity from the eighteenth century to the present day. In particular, it focuses on the use of classical heritages to construct both European and national identities (in the plural) and especially on how Danes in this period have engaged with a sense of European commonality through their engagements with the classical past.

Abstract

This first in-depth study of women’s politeness examines the complex relationship individuals had with the discursive ideals of polite femininity. Contextualising women’s autobiographical writings (journals and letters) with a wide range of eighteenth-century printed didactic material, it analyses the tensions between politeness discourse which aimed to regulate acceptable feminine identities and women’s possibilities to resist this disciplinary regime. Ylivuori focuses on the central role the female body played as both the means through which individuals actively fashioned themselves as polite and feminine, and the supposedly truthful expression of their inner status of polite femininity.

Abstract

Abstract

During the past four decades or so, various operators of fractional calculus, such as those named after Riemann–Liouville, Weyl, Hadamard, Grunwald–Letnikov, Riesz, Erdelyi–Kober, Liouville–Caputo, and so on, have been found to be remarkably popular and important due mainly to their demonstrated applications in numerous diverse and widespread fields of the mathematical, physical, chemical, engineering, and statistical sciences. Many of these fractional calculus operators provide several potentially useful tools for solving differential, integral, differintegral, and integro-differential equations, together with the fractional-calculus analogues and extensions of each of these equations, and various other problems involving special functions of mathematical physics, as well as their extensions and generalizations in one and more variables. In this Special Issue, we invite and welcome review, expository, and original research articles dealing with the recent advances in the theory of fractional calculus and its multidisciplinary applications.

Abstract

Neutrosophy (1995) is a new branch of philosophy that studies triads of the form (, , ), where is an entity {i.e. element, concept, idea, theory, logical proposition, etc.}, is the opposite of , while is the neutral (or indeterminate) between them, i.e., neither nor .Based on neutrosophy, the neutrosophic triplets were founded, which have a similar form (x, neut(x), anti(x)), that satisfy several axioms, for each element x in a given set. This collective book presents original research papers by many neutrosophic researchers from around the world, that report on the state-of-the-art and recent advancements of neutrosophic triplets, neutrosophic duplets, neutrosophic multisets and their algebraic structures – that have been defined recently in 2016 but have gained interest from world researchers. Connections between classical algebraic structures and neutrosophic triplet / duplet / multiset structures are also studied. And numerous neutrosophic applications in various fields, such as: multi-criteria decision making, image segmentation, medical diagnosis, fault diagnosis, clustering data, neutrosophic probability, human resource management, strategic planning, forecasting model, multi-granulation, supplier selection problems, typhoon disaster evaluation, skin lesson detection, mining algorithm for big data analysis, etc.
