Abstract

This book focuses on opportunities and challenges in implementing a bioeconomy strategy from a research and education perspective. It draws on contributions presented during the 30th EURAGRI annual conference held in Tartu (Estonia) in September 2016, as well as on other workshops organised as part of EURAGRI. EURAGRI is an informal gathering of EU research and higher education organisations and ministries interested in agri-food research. It works as a platform of exchange and discussion on topics of common interest pertaining to the organisation, orientation and outlook of agri-food research in Europe in connection with global changes.

Abstract

The Cota, territorialised food-processing cooperation partnerships, are made up of groups of SME which apply pioneering collective strategies to improve their competitiveness by using the region as a decisive variable. The study of some fifteen cases suggests two analysis paths. The first covers the building up of these new forms of cooperation by highlighting organisational trajectories. The second puts forward thoughts on the role of the territory variable in the Cota dynamics through original territorialisation strategies. The Cota are not just an analysis tool for new forms of cooperation in the food-processing industry. They are also of interest politically, as they constitute an experimental laboratory for public action by putting forward outline recommendations for good support practices.

Abstract

Sorghum is a vital food crop for populations in arid and sub-arid areas. It is also cultivated in temperate areas for animal feed. This book addresses all aspects of the plant (biology, genetics, sensitivity to pests) together with the cultivation systems, harvesting methods and how it is processed into human food. A wealth of illustrations supplement the in-depth, up-to-date knowledge on sorghum, its ecological functions and integrated protection.

Abstract

To mark its 30th anniversary, the National Food Council interviewed the players who have contributed to its history. Some opted to write a reflective account of their experience. Others produced a theoretical assessment of their disciplines. These different angles of approach identify what makes heritage and the contribution of the National Food Council to the public food policies and actions. Abstract

The cassava-processing industry plays a key role in food safety and in the economies in the Global South, mainly in rural areas but increasingly in cities too. It presents an overview of cassava production worldwide, covering all of the various aspects of the plant (botany, genetics), as well as its main forms of cultivation, its diseases and pests. It describes how to use, consume and process cassava.

Abstract

This work provides a synthesis of recent research on the evolution of agriculture and food in a capitalist system. It is based on approaches not well-known in France such as international political economy and ecological economy. It studies agricultural processing in terms of ecology, history and geopolitics and traces specific aspects of agriculture and food in the 21st century. Lastly, it proposes theoretical approaches with a view to renewing the agricultural economy.

Abstract

Where are we today in the place of women in family agricultures compared with men, in both Northern and Southern countries. Based on very diverse field studies, this book exposes the need to analyse family agricultures from the perspective of masculine-feminine relations and social constructions that organise these power ratios. It addresses in succession the social management of male-female relationships in agriculture, gender inequalities in the definition and impact of agricultural and environmental policies and lastly the different approaches of gender in the food systems.
