Abstract

The concepts of art history were developed in the nineteenth century. This can inhibit dialogue with neighbouring disciplines. The concept “medium”, which belongs to the late twentieth century, can provide assistance and connect the argument of art history to the contemporary state of consciousness at least in the cultural sciences dealing with communication. At the centre of the book lie questions of the use and effect of objects. Dealing with a series of high-ranking art works, an observational method is practised that is both historically founded and compatible with modern discourses. The six case studies address the Naumburg Stifterfiguren, Pietro Lorenzetti’s frescos in Assisi, the Parament of Narbonne, the tomb of Archbishop Chichele in Canterbury, Raphael’s Sistine Madonna in Dresden, and the self-portraits of Anton Pilgram in St Stephen’s Church in Vienna.

Abstract

Jahrhunderts.

Abstract

The publication focuses on the – for Europe - radical and influential new installation of the Imperial Picture Gallery in Vienna at the turn of the 19th century, a seminal time of change both for art-history and European civilization. Function, internal structure and presentation of the Imperial Picture Gallery evolved in a way that was to prove exemplary: the princely gallery was transformed into a public art museum, with a new installation at Belvedere Palace that reflected art-historical principles.

Abstract

The Nako temple complex with its earliest structures dating back to the 11th century is an extraordinary testimony of early Tibetan Buddhism not anymore preserved in today’s Tibet. Endangered by the rough environment,
improper treatment and frequent earthquakes, the outstanding monuments were re-discovered by scholars from Austrian universities in the 1980s.
The transdisciplinary research project carried out over more than 20 years led to in-depth studies, preservation and model-like conservation of the temples and their artworks.

Abstract

Rudolf von Eitelberger (1817-1885) was a central actor within the emergence of numerous art historical institutions and initiatives in cultural politics and is known, among his other positions, as the first Professor of Art History at the University of Vienna, as the founding director of the Imperial Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry and its affiliated School of Applied Arts (1867).The 19 essays in this volume differentiate his influence, i.a. his art-theoretical attitude towards the aesthetics of autonomy and the academic education of artists, his architectural critical positions between research on the history of architecture and ideologically influenced style preferences, his cultural-political interventions within the Habsburg monarchy and in exchange with Prussia, his role in the bourgeois womens’ movement and so forth. These essays are supplemented by the first list of Eitelberger’s writings aiming at completeness, comprising nearly 600 positions, as well as a newly researched list of books formerly in Eitelberger’s collection, which are now preserved in the MAK library.

Abstract

The collection of essays considers the art journal Propyläen that was edited by Goethe in the years between 1798 and 1800 for the first time as a whole. This enterprise, which was of great significance for the history of aesthetics, will be placed in a new light. The book situates the texts within their historical contexts, and thus provides a key resource for future research, for literary as well as art studies.

Abstract

“Visualizations of cult“ deals with the strategies of visual representations of cult as well as with concretisations of its visualization, in the perspective of historical and cultural studies. Cult is understood in a broad sense, describing modes of collective veneration and auratization, in religious, quasi-religious or trivial-profane connections. Cult practice and experience and their manifestations are treated under five aspects: (1) objects: staging of cult, (2) subjects: experiences of cult, (3) cult of persons, (4) spaces of cult, (5) manifestations of cult practice.
