Abstract

The stereotypical image of quiet, dusty rooms with hushing librarians does not ring true for contemporary research libraries. On the contrary, libraries are often at the forefront of technological development. As they open up to new activities and take on new responsibilities, patrons use libraries in new ways. Increased openness is a common denominator of these transitions. At the same time, there is an ambiguity attached to the celebration of “openness” as an indisputable good, an ambiguity resonating throughout this book.

Abstract

"Why do some places grow while others are shrinking? What are the most important driving forces behind increases in the number of inhabitants and jobs? How can places affect their own growth? This book is written for those who want to understand how structural forces affect the development of their locale and how one can create growth through increased attractiveness. Most Norwegian municipalities, cities, regions and counties try to stimulate growth and development in their localities. They want growth in the population and more jobs. This book describes the main features of regional development in Norway since 2000. Telemark Research Institute has proposed a new model, the attractiveness model, to explain the growth and development of places. This book explains how this model works, how it is constructed and how it can be used to understand the forces behind regional development."

Abstract

"In recent years there has been an increased focus on the importance of the environment
for the development of elite athletes. In order to understand the factors that contribute
to or limit an athlete’s sporting development, it is not enough to study only the individual but
the whole environment in which the athlete develops. The purpose of this chapter is to investigate
what characterizes a successful elite sport environment in Danish badminton. An elite
sports environment that continuously manages to create senior results at the highest international
level and win medals at the European championships, the World championships and
the Olympics. The study was organized as a case study of the national elite sports center in
Badminton Denmark (BD). Data was based on interviews with players, coaches and managers,
observations on training and in competitions, meetings and analysis of documents. The
environment was centered on self-understanding based on “us against the rest of the world” and a fundamental value in the environment was to create intelligent players while focusing
on individual development through high training quality. The organizational culture was
characterized by being: 1) a well documented, quality oriented and dialogue-based learning
environment, 2) an environment with hard competition and 3) an environment with proximal
role models."

Abstract

"The development and spread of self-help groups in Norway has been unlike that in other western countries. Public authorities, in collaboration with private sector volunteer resources, have created a national hybrid organization, Self-Help Norway (Selvhjelp Norge), to promote ‘self-help’ options. The introduction of combined groups, in which participants come together with a range of different problems or diagnoses, is also unusual.

This book takes a closer look at the phenomenon of self-help in light of theories relating to group therapy, social movements, organizational sociology and welfare-state development. The individual chapters are based on the authors’ own research on self-help groups and the way they are organized in Norway. Our underlying point of departure is that self-help is in fact something quite different from the common public perception of a self-absorbed and ‘narcissistic’ activity that occurs at the expense of the community.

Self-help groups have, rightly so, a focus on individual change and have recently gained a stronger psychological orientation. There is however a need for describing and analyzing the self-help group’s collective dimension, the reciprocal form of self-help that takes place in the context of the group. We analyze as well the growth of what we have called ‘the new self-help movement’ in the border zone between public and private sector and show how self-help has been established in various local societies as a form of social entrepreneurship. The movement’s breakthrough with the public sector is internationally unique, but it can also have come at a cost in the form of less legitimacy and relevance for the other self-help organizations. We pose questions about where these developments will lead."
