Abstract

The book brings together seven essays on Cicero written by specialists in the Author. The essays are grouped into two sections: in the first one, papers on Cicero’s works (the dialogues: Lucullus, De finibus, De oratore, De officiis); in the second one, papers on both the early and late reception of Cicero (in Seneca, Petrarch and Erasmus). The essays belong to professors from Brazilian (Adriano Scatolin, Bianca Fanelli Morganti, Elaine Cristine Sartorelli, Sidney Calheiros de Lima), French (Carlos Lévy) and Italian universities (Aldo Setaioli, Ermanno Malaspina). The book avoids biographical approach, which sometimes takes the works of Cicero as a reliable witness of political and family events, sometimes distrusts them as a distorted picture of public and private actors; or yet, conceives of them as either the Author’s profession of faith in a philosophical doctrine, or a tendentious presentation of the theses of philosophical schools. Instead, the essays adopt another interpretative key, so that, when analyzing a philosophical dialogue of Cicero, instead of seeking references to its historical moment, focus on its controversial aspects (due to the dispute between the schools of philosophy), rhetorical aspects (the amplifying devices through which the Author compares the strength of one thesis with the weakness of another), fictional aspects (including the description of the scene and the picture of the characters). Thus, it can be said that the book seeks a more appropriate approach to Cicero’s works, not taking them as mere source of historical knowledge, but considering their historicity, that is, the devices for discursive production of their own time.

Abstract

This book, prepared as a step in the academic cooperation between the CECH – Centro de Estudos Clássicos e Humanísticos of the UC – and the PRAGMA – Program of Ancient Philosophical Studies of the UFRJ -, includes several studies on the reception of Greco-Latin themes and models in the literature and culture of Portugal and Brazil. Its originality is a consequence of putting together two different cultures and several disciplines, as researchers come from Literature, Philosophy and Ancient History. The period considered, from the 16th to the 20th centuries, allows a global view of the cultural evolution of the two countries, in a good part made in common.

Abstract

The study of Ancient History is a process encompassing several fields of knowledge, various methods, several types of sources, sometimes including comparisons with other civilizations of antiquity or from other periods. Historiographical texts raise a methodical criticism which comprehend data from archaeology, but also from literature and, within this range, theatre, rhetoric, dialogues and specific treaties of the several disciplines. As a reflection of such a multidisciplinarity, this volume compiles a series of texts in which Ancient History dialogs with other subject areas, namely: hermeneutics, literature and arts, political rhetoric, philosophy, religion and reception of Ancient History in modernity.

Abstract

Languages and cities are irreverent: they never let / have never let themselves be reduced to their materiality. Cities are not equivalent to cities and languages are not equivalent to languages. Languages and cities are undisciplined even in the face of any norm to which they are subjected, as thinking and language, by not being definitive, changes with each speaker, in the course of the exercise of their citizenship regardless of the age, wishes to affirm himself/herself as a free person and each linguistic community wishes to protect its identity. It is only through liberty that the knowledge and progress of humankind, unconditionally based on the exercise of verbal language, are accomplished.

Abstract

Unified by the theoretical and hermeneutical arch that links physics to metaphysics, the three subjects here analysed, belonging to the famous Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis Socíetatis lesu (1592-1606) - colour, nature and knowledge - strike the reader by their modernity. The first, reveals Coimbra productivity, regarding Manuel de Góis' theory of colours, so similar to Goethe's; the second, underlines ali the aesthetical possibilities the Coimbra Commentaries may confer to some theoretical domains as anthropology, cosmology or even science; lastly, after studying a theological theme that pertains to the doctrine of the knowledge, "separation", to the reader is proposed a surprisingly interpretation: the Cartesian tone ofthis precise theme.

Abstract

The expression “poiesis of democracy” in the title refers to its central concern: to understand “democracy” not as a univocal and absolute concept, but as a result of historical permanencies and transformations inherent of both its Greek formulation and its contemporary uses, that is, as a problem whose answers derive from permanently meditated and mediated negotiation. Thus, the main problem dealt with in the volume is the analysis — preferably interdisciplinary and open to multiple theoretical methodological approaches — of the construction of the concept of Athenian democracy as a problematic political and cultural arena (and not as a goal, structure or program), perceptible in different authors and discourses of the classical period, as well as reflections that supplemented them throughout the fifth and fourth centuries BC.

Abstract

The eleven studies in this book approach the human reflective and linguistic self-transparency, in its relativity, uncertainties and interrogations, through the lenses of philosophy, image, literature and mythology. It studies mainly philosophical conceptions of the 20th century, specially Husserl’s, Heidegger’s and Wittgenstein’s philosophy of language and phenomenology, but it goes back also to some themes in roman rethoric (Cicero and Augustin), and brings into actual debate some key aspects of the philosophy of Kant and German Idealism. Special reference is also made to main figures of the 20th century Portuguese thought: Fernando Pessoa, José Marinho and Eudoro de Sousa. Studying its subject in a wide range of expressions, the texts in this volume call into question elements of literature, with Borges and Pessoa, visual arts, with Escher, and of the 20th century architectonic thought. A unifying understanding of the conditions of human linguistic, conceptual and imagistic self-reflection is thus searched through a large range of thinkers and expressions.
