Abstract

Comes from the 10th century the oldest codex with the treatise On the Sublime. For a long time attributed to Cassius Longinus (third century ), the text is now generally considered a first century work, written by an anonymous or a Dionysius Longinus whose life and work is unknown. Ignored, as it seems, in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the text came to meet its editio princeps only in 1554, in Basel and by the hand of Francesco Robortello. It was then successively edited and translated, first into Latin and later into several European languages, starting with the famous French version of Boileau that for a long time was the main source for the knowledge of the treatise in Europe. Peri Hypsous moves away from the stylistic approach of ancient rhetorical books and presents a definition of Sublime as a quality of discourse which produces in the hearers and readers not persuasion but wonder and ecstasy. It is precisely this idea of wonder and shudder that has inspired the works of Burke (A Philosophical Enquiry into the origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful, 1757) and Kant, by whose hands the treatise On the Sublime entered the history of Western Aesthetics.

Abstract

The presence of religion in Greek literature has been thoroughly analysed in the most relevant historical and philological studies. Nevertheless, there exists a lack of detailed research on the tension between “religiosity and irreligiosity” which starts to become apparent particularly in Classical Athens. Therefore, this volume aims to focus on the appearance of irreligious elements in the most important literary genres of Classical Athens: drama, oratory and historiography. After a scientific update of those contributions especially relevant to our subject, we provide commentary on selected passages from the genres mentioned above to illustrate the significance of irreligious terminology in the literature of Classical Athens. The methodological principal we have used is the verification of the irreligious terms in the texts by means of inductive criteria which form the basis of our commentaries. An epilogue completes this work: the reflections of the most significant posterior authors, from Plato to Plutarch, on the “irreligious problem”.

Abstract

Greece and Rome have been traditionally labelled as the main pillar and the cradle of Western Civilization. However, this dictum needs to be rephrased in an increasingly globalized and unfair world. In this context, it is neccesary to implement new teaching methodologies capable of underlining the importance of this legacy not only in the interest of Universities and of culture but also in other milieus apparently unrelated to Greece and Rome. Apart from providing with several proposals of teaching innovation in the field of Classics and Ancient History, this book offers insightful contributions into the role of the Graeco-Roman culture in disparate fields such as marketing, the fight for social rights, or contemporary literature and theatre.

Abstract

The study of Ancient History is a process encompassing several fields of knowledge, various methods, several types of sources, sometimes including comparisons with other civilizations of antiquity or from other periods. Historiographical texts raise a methodical criticism which comprehend data from archaeology, but also from literature and, within this range, theatre, rhetoric, dialogues and specific treaties of the several disciplines. As a reflection of such a multidisciplinarity, this volume compiles a series of texts in which Ancient History dialogs with other subject areas, namely: hermeneutics, literature and arts, political rhetoric, philosophy, religion and reception of Ancient History in modernity.

Abstract

Languages and cities are irreverent: they never let / have never let themselves be reduced to their materiality. Cities are not equivalent to cities and languages are not equivalent to languages. Languages and cities are undisciplined even in the face of any norm to which they are subjected, as thinking and language, by not being definitive, changes with each speaker, in the course of the exercise of their citizenship regardless of the age, wishes to affirm himself/herself as a free person and each linguistic community wishes to protect its identity. It is only through liberty that the knowledge and progress of humankind, unconditionally based on the exercise of verbal language, are accomplished.
