Abstract

This book studies the making of the postcolonial author and text as a brand. It examines specific themes, wherein the postcolonial text acquires global visibility, even determining the nature of global debates: the authenticity of representing ‘native’ cultures, subalternity, indigeneity, and humanism. It studies the circulation of the postcolonial as literary-ethnic chic and the author as a globally mobile celebrity.

Abstract

This volume examines the loanwords found in 18 late-Byzantine histories and chronicles. In order to analyze the lexical interferences in the lexicon of late-Byzantine historical literature, all words were included (except place names and proper names) that substantiate language contact. The editors place special emphasis on the sociolinguistic context in which the loanwords were used.

Abstract

What is World Literature? To answer this question, this book asks another one: How is it produced, that is, what are the material conditions, processes, and actors, which enable Latin-American Literature to circulate internationally and become (Latin-American) World Literature? Exploring the tension between literature for and of the world, the volume also intend to give visibility—and value as World Literature— to local forms of expression.

Abstract

This book explores the poetic articulations of a shift from a transcendent to an immanent worldview, as reflected in the manner of evaluation of body and soul in Goethe’s Faust and Ḥāfiẓ’ Divan. Focusing on two lifeworks that illustrate their authors’ respective intellectual histories, this cross-genre study goes beyond the textual confines of the two poets’ Divans to compare important building blocks of their intellectual worlds.

Abstract

Aristotle’s neat compartmentalization notwithstanding (Poetics, ch. 9), historians and playwrights have both been laying claim to representations of the past – arguably since Antiquity, but certainly since the Renaissance. At a time when narratology challenges historiographers to differentiate their “emplotments” (White) from literary inventions, this thirteen-essay collection takes a fresh look at the production of historico-political knowledge in literature and the intricacies of reality and fiction. Written by experts who teach in Germany, Austria, Russia, and the United States, the articles provide a thorough interpretation of early modern drama (with a view to classical times and the 19th century) as an ideological platform that is as open to royal self-fashioning and soteriology as it is to travestying and subverting the means and ends of historical interpretation. The comparative analysis of metapoetic and historiosophic aspects also sheds light on drama as a transnational phenomenon, demonstrating the importance of the cultural net that links the multifaceted textual examples from France, Russia, England, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Abstract

From the 14th until the 19th century the last novella of Boccaccio’s Decameron, also known as the Griselda story, has been translated and adapted countless times in many European languages. This story’s success can be explained by considering it a myth and analysing how this myth engages with contemporary discourses, such as the definition of the ideal wife, the querelle des femmes, the socio-political consequences of social exogamy, and tyranny.

Abstract

This monograph interprets Sermones book 1 as a collection of Horace's credentials for Maecenas and traces his efforts in getting accepted as an associate of the latter after his miscalculation in joining Brutus. Although Horace regularly reflects on his poetic orientation and standards of good poetry, his primary objective was his self-presentation. The volume also examines his commentary on contemporary socio-political themes.
