Abstract

In the German speaking world, questions concerning the voice or speaker of lyrical poems are often oversimplified through recourse to the disputed concept of “the lyrical I.” This volume addresses questions surrounding the expressive agent in lyric poems and thus contributes to the controversial debate about adequate forms for conceptualizing lyric poetry at the intersection between philological traditions and practices specific to lyric poetry.

Abstract

This somewhat unconventional “introduction to rhetoric” does not engage in a historical or systematic survey. Rather, it explores the specific substantive concern of rhetoric: how does persuasive speech help to achieve cooperation based on understanding? In light of this question, the author describes the current status of rhetoric as a modern principle for establishing validity that is based on persuasion.

Abstract

This book contains a collection of papers discussing questions related to space and movement in the framework of computational archaeology, landscape archaeology, historical geography and archaeological theory. The contributions, written by recognized experts in the field, show how the study of settlements pattern and movement has been dramatically transformed by the use of technology like Geographic Information System (GIS). The papers focus on the ways to approach past movement using GIS in archaeological landscape studies: theoretical, technical and interpretative issues are addressed and explored. They provide the state of the art in theory and methodology and show, by using case studies, the potential of the developed approaches for the understanding of factors and effects of landscape formation and transformation in the long term.

Abstract

What does order mean - what orders meaning? These are at once elementary and complex questions for the theoretical and praxeological self-definition of the textual and visual sciences. The collected essays in this volume seek answers from a wide variety of disciplinary and methodological perspectives in relation to both ancient and modern objects. They engage in a dialogue between the notions of “classical” philology and “modern” literary theory.

Abstract

How does one become a recognized architect? Where does the inspiration come from and how is it transformed into buildings, streets and cities? With his Architectural Journal Rob Krier takes the readers on a fascinating journey, guiding one through pivotal moments of early stages of his career as an architect. With a sense of humour, empathy and charm Krier tells a story of his professional path, starting with holidays spent with his grandparents, images, colors and smells that shaped his future choices. He talks about his triumphs and stumbles, giving an intimate insight into the architectural profession, deprived of any pretence to eternal greatness and heroic narrative. The journal encompasses 15 formative years of Krier’s career, starting from architectural studies in Munich, through trips and temporary settlements in Luxemburg, Stuttgart and Lausanne. Krier’s memories are accompanied by theoretical texts. Here he touches upon architect’s responsibilities, importance of historical legacy and exhorts to boycott ugliness in the name of beauty. Striving for something else than pure functionality in architecture, Krier calls for poetical approach, so characteristic for his work, stating: Poetry is in the breath of the building, the aroma that exudes from all its nooks”.Rob Krier is one of the most influential architects and urban planners of the second half of the 20th century. His theoretical writings deal with the idea of town planning informed by traditional notions of harmony, civic space and community.

Abstract

Based on the premise that a society’s sense of commonality depends upon media practices of political communitarization, this study examines how Hollywood was deployed during the Second World War. It shows that Hollywood responded to the crisis of democracy in the war by creating a new genre. Using an affective theory of genre cinema, it offers a new characterization of the relationship between politics and poetics in forming commonality.
