Abstract

This work approaches the fields of homogenization and of materials design for the linear and nonlinear mechanical properties with prescribed properties-profile. The set of achievable properties is bounded by the zeroth-order bounds (which are material specific), the first-order bounds (containing volume fractions of the phases) and the second-order Hashin-Shtrikman bounds with eigenfields in terms of tensorial texture coefficients for arbitrarily anisotropic textured materials.

Abstract

Metamaterials, composed of structural building blocks, derive their effective properties from the structure, rather than from their constituent materials they are built from. By designing and analysing a mechanical unstable metamaterial, the potentials given by structural instabilities are investigated. Furthermore the possibilities in modelling the stability behaviour and the effective properties of such materials on the different length-scales are intensively discussed throughout this work.

Abstract

To determine the characteristics and properties of cellular solids for an application, and to allow a systematic practical use by means of correlations and modelling approaches, we perform experimental investigations and develop numerical methods. In view of coupled multi-physics simulations, we employ the phase-field method. Finally, the applicability is demonstrated exemplarily for open-cell metal foams, providing qualitative and quantitative comparison with experimental data.
