Abstract

Are discount chains responsible for 'sellout' of the classical city? What kind of city do they endorse and what forms of urbanization do they really engender? Can planning practices still intervene to steer the course of urban development? How can concepts of sustainable architecture and urban design be effectively incorporated in the retail sector? This book offers an alternative understanding of the notion of 'DiscountCity' that serves as the basis for future-oriented and collective action.

Abstract

Model-based performance prediction systematically deals with the evaluation of software performance to avoid for example bottlenecks, estimate execution environment sizing, or identify scalability limitations for new usage scenarios. Such performance predictions require up-to-date software performance models. This book describes a new integrated reverse engineering approach for the reconstruction of parameterised software performance models (software component architecture and behaviour).

Abstract

This dissertation thesis presents an approach enabling the modelling and quality-of-service prediction of event-based systems at the architecture-level. Applying a two-step model refinement transformation, the approach integrates platform-specific performance influences of the underlying middleware while enabling the use of different existing analytical and simulation-based prediction techniques.

Abstract

Service-orientation has an increasing impact upon the design process and the architecture of environmental information systems. This thesis specifies the SERVUS design methodology for geospatial applications based upon standards of the Open Geospatial Consortium. SERVUS guides the system architect to rephrase use case requirements as a network of semantically-annotated requested resources and to iteratively match them with offered resources that mirror the capabilities of existing services.

Abstract

Digital products and services are changing the energy utilities deeply. In energy sales the product complexity as well as the fast-developing information technology lead to disruptive changes and new competitors. In this book a comprehensive market analysis collects systematically requirements for upcoming information architectures. Subsequently presented recommendations incorporate generalized IT enterprise architectures, new approaches for product development and useful tools.

Abstract

The German art and architecture historian and art critic WilhelmLübke (1826-1893) taught at the important 19th century polytechnics in Berlin, Zurich and Stuttgart. From 1885 until his death, he was also Professor of Art History at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic, now the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). This publication provides an insight into the biography and career of Wilhelm Lübke as well as a comprehensive list of his writings.

Abstract

Early warning systems are supposed to deliver information about an emerging threat in order to allow persons and organizations to react accordingly. The design of an early warning system presents complex challenges to the system architects. For this, the present work provides a framework for the architecture of future early warning systems. Particular attention is paid to solve various architectural problems by means of semantic technologies and the automation of workflows.

Abstract

To avoid design-related performance problems, model-driven performance prediction methods analyse the response times, throughputs, and resource utilizations of software architectures before and during implementation. This thesis proposes new modeling languages and according model transformations, which allow a reusable description of usage profile dependencies to the performance of software components. Predictions based on this new methods can support performance-related design decisions.

Abstract

Software Architecture covers the technical organization of a software system and principles which determine design and evolution of the system. The research issue of this work results from software evolution, when the software needs to be modified. The contribution of this book is a method for change request analysis based on software architecture models. The method supports derivation of tasks covering several work areas and life cycle phases.

Abstract

Modern cities cannot be imagined without traffic lights controlling the road network. To handle the network's changing demands efficiently, the signal plan specification needs to be shifted from the design time to the run-time of a signal system. The generic observer/controller architecture proposed for Organic Computing facilitates this shift. A two-levelled learning mechanism optimises signal plans on-line while a distributed coordination mechanism establishes green waves in the road network.
