Abstract

This work demonstrates a highly intuitive robot for Surgical Craniotomy Procedures. Utilising a wheeled hand-held robot, to navigate the Craniotomy Drill over a patient's skull, the system does not remove the surgeons from the procedure, but supports them during this critical phase of the operation.

Abstract

In cardiovascular diagnostics, blood pressure computation from flow data acquired by magnetic resonance imaging is considered promising. Accordingly, this work describes a method for the computation of complete spatiotemporal blood pressure fields in the human aorta. Key issues are the robust pressure computation from noisy input data, the application of regularized blood flow models, the combination of spatial and temporal blood pressure information, and the experimental evaluation.

Abstract

This study considers pain as at once both a medical and cultural phenomenon. It takes as starting point the essays and lectures of Viktor von Weizsäcker, who undertook in his Medical Anthropology to highlight this phenomenon.The central objective of the present investigation is the contemporary significance which may be assigned to the historical conceptions of pain developed in Weizsäcker’s Medical Anthropology – against the background of current findings in physiological and biotechnical pain rearch. This throws open the question of the boundaries of the conceptions at the core of Medical Anthropology.

Abstract

The goal of this work is the introduction of efficient antenna structures on the basis of the requirement of different microwave imaging methods; i.e. quantitative and qualitative microwave imaging techniques. Several criteria are proposed for the evaluation of single element antenna structures for application in microwave imaging systems. The performance of the proposed antennas are evaluated in simulation and measurement scenarios.

Abstract

In this work, new concepts of body-matched antennas for microwave medical applications were developed, where the antennas are placed directly on or in the human body. Two types of antennas were designed - on-body matched antennas for diagnosis and implantable antennas for data telemetry with the main focus of miniaturization yet maintained a high radiation performance. The applicability of the antennas was verified using a medical imaging system for the detection of hemorrhagic stroke.

Abstract

In robotic beating heart surgery, a remote-controlled robot can be used to carry out the operation while automatically canceling out the heart motion. The surgeon controlling the robot is shown a stabilized view of the heart. First, we consider the use of directional statistics for estimation of the phase of the heartbeat. Second, we deal with reconstruction of a moving and deformable surface. Third, we address the question of obtaining a stabilized image of the heart.
