Abstract

Model predictive control (MPC) is an advanced control design used in many industries worldwide. An MPC selects control actions which are optimal with respect to a given performance metric as well as any physically-motivated constraints. MPC has therefore gained significant research attention over the past several decades. Advances in MPC continue to unlock its potential to solve a wide variety of practical issues. This book presents some of the state-of-the-art in MPC design from theoretical and applications perspectives. It covers a broad spectrum of MPC application areas, reviewing applications as diverse as air conditioning, pharmaceutical manufacturing, mineral column flotation, actuator faults, and hydraulic fracturing, while also highlighting recent theoretical advancements in control technology that integrate it with data-driven models, zone tracking, or process safety and cybersecurity. Both centralized and distributed MPC formulations are presented. The purpose of this book is to assemble a collection of current research in MPC that handles practically-motivated theoretical issues as well as recent MPC applications, with the aim of highlighting the significant potential benefits of new MPC theory and design.

Abstract

Energy storage can provide numerous beneficial services and cost savings within the electricity grid, especially when facing future challenges like renewable and electric vehicle (EV) integration. Public bodies, private companies and individuals are deploying storage facilities for several purposes, including arbitrage, grid support, renewable generation, and demand-side management. Storage deployment can therefore yield benefits like reduced frequency fluctuation, better asset utilisation and more predictable power profiles. Such uses of energy storage can reduce the cost of energy, reduce the strain on the grid, reduce the environmental impact of energy use, and prepare the network for future challenges.This Special Issue of Energies explore the latest developments in the control of energy storage in support of the wider energy network, and focus on the control of storage rather than the storage technology itself.

Abstract

Mathematical optimization is the selection of the best element in a set with respect to a given criterion. Optimization has become one of the most-used tools in modern control theory for computing the control law, adjusting the controller parameters (tuning), model fitting, and finding suitable conditions in order to fulfill a given closed-loop property, among others. In the simplest case, optimization consists of maximizing or minimizing a function by systematically choosing input values from a valid input set and computing the function value. Abstract

Scheduling and control are typically viewed as separate applications because of historical factors such as limited computing resources. Now that algorithms and computing resources have advanced, there are new efforts to have short-term decisions (control) interact or merge with longer-term decisions (scheduling). A new generation of numerical optimization methods are evolving to capture additional benefits and unify the approach to manufacturing process automation. This special issue is a collection of some of the latest advancements in scheduling and control for both batch and continuous processes. It contains developments with multi-scale problem formulation, software for the new class of problems, and a survey of the strengths and weaknesses of successive levels of integration.

Dietary fiber has long been recognized for its role in digestive function. However, currently there is scientific debate about definitions (descriptive and analytical), optimal intake, and essentiality in the human diet. Dietary fiber is a key substrate for bacterial metabolism in the colon, which makes research on dietary fiber an important issue that complements current interest in the gut microbiota. Dietary fiber is also important for prevention and management of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and other chronic diseases. The large molecular mass of polymers and our ability to manipulate their compositions and molecular structures have allowed for producing synthetic polymers with attractive properties. new polymers with remarkable characteristics are synthesized. Because of the huge production volume of commodity polymers, a little improvement in the operation of commodity-polymer processes can lead to significant economic gains. On the other hand, a little improvement in the quality of specialty polymers can lead to substantial increase in economic profits.

Abstract

Agricultural drainage, such as runoffs from farmlands and wineries, are contaminated waters. Their management is monitored by environmental protection authorities who set targets of volume or pollutant reductions. Due to large quantities and seasonal variations, the targets are often not met, and effective management remains a problem in many parts of the world.Natural wetlands are known as the ‘kidneys’ of the earth with unique water purification functions that have long been recognized. Imitating the functions of natural wetlands, constructed wetlands are engineered systems purposely built to treat contaminated waters. They may therefore be called the ‘artificial kidneys’ of the earth. Rural areas often only have low-value lands available for constructed wetlands. Where large quantities of drainage are produced, farmlands are often adjacent to degraded natural wetlands that have reduced ecosystem functions. Controlled discharge and treatment in the wetlands can potentially be part of an integrated solution to multiple environmental problems.This book includes some recent studies on the fate of pollutants removed from agricultural drainage in wetlands, modelling of wetland performance, innovative systems, and the use of non-hazardous agricultural waste in constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. These studies enhance our understanding of wetland systems, and will help develop wetland technology towards solving the problems associated with agricultural drainage.

Abstract

Nowadays, we meet microsystems in a variety of devices used in modern life. They are used, for example, in medicine, biology, industry, home appliances, transport, and aerospace. One of the main problems in the technological development of microsystems is their actuation. Several solutions have been suggested, such as electrostatic, electrothermal, electromagnetic, or piezoelectric actuation, although a valid solution seems to be still out of our reach.Another crucial problem in designing, manufacturing, and operating microsystems for micromanipulation consists in the loss of some basic paradigms commonly used as a source of inspiration at the macroscale. The differences in designing at the two different scales may have either positive or negative effects. For example, an unthinkable structure in the day–life domain, as, for example, a long “cantilever” bridge over the Hudson river, would become possible after downscaling “everything” from road dimensions to the micro-world. Alternatively, a fantastic electric motor that works very well in our world, by virtue of the basic principles of electromagnetism, would become useless if scaled back to the micro cosmos.This book opens a small window on the world of research, presenting a group of papers that try to respond to the challenge of increasing the efficiency and functionality of modern microsystems. A final little section is also dedicated to the development of new teaching methods successfully adopted in some university courses.

With the growing interest in electrical machines in recent times, the multiphase machine field has developed into a fascinating research area. Abstract

The goal of bioprocessing is to optimize process variables, such as product quantity and quality, in a reproducible, scalable, and transferable manner. However, bioprocesses are highly complex. A large number of process parameters and raw material attributes exist, which are highly interactive, and may vary from batch to batch. Those interactions need to be understood, and the source of variance must be identified and controlled.While purely data-driven correlations, such as chemometric models of spectroscopic data, may be employed for the understanding how process parameters are related to process variables, they can hardly be deployed outside of the calibration space. Currently, mechanistic models, models based on mechanistic links and first principles, are in the focus of development. They are perceived to allow transferability and scalability, because mechanistics can be extrapolated. Moreover, the models deliver a large range of hardly-measureable states and physiological parameters.The current Special Issue wants to display current solutions and case studies of development and deployment of hybrid models and multi-parametric control of bioprocesses.
