Abstract

What does 'anticapitalism' really mean for the politics and culture of the twenty-first century? Anticapitalism is an idea which, despite going global, remains rooted in the local, persisting as a loose collection of grassroots movements and actions. Anticapitalism needs to develop a coherent and cohering philosophy, something which cultural theory and the intellectual legacy of the New Left can help to provide, notably through the work of key radical thinkers, such as Ernesto Laclau, Stuart Hall, Antonio Negri, Gilles Deleuze and Judith Butler.

Anticapitalism and Culture argues that there is a strong relationship between the radical tradition of cultural studies and the new political movements which try to resist corporate globalization. Indeed, the two need each other: whilst theory can shape and direct the huge diversity of anticapitalist activism, the energy and sheer political engagement of the anticapitalist movement can breathe new life into cultural studies.Anticapitalism is an idea which, despite going global, remains rooted in the local, persisting as a loose collection of

Abstract

This book presents the development and present status of adaptions of chaos theory for literary studies. Furthermore the integration of these methodological approaches into a discipline that is oriented towards cultural studies is demonstrated. The publication consists of four parts. The first part of the work deals with the issues created through questions posed by historical philosophy and historiography. It discusses how reflections on linear time, as well as on the description and explanation of sequences, circularity and synchronicities lead to an increased complexity in the semanticts of time in the notion of the objects analized. It also discusses the integration of discourses from other disciplines into literary history. It is demonstrated that both aspects - increased complexity and supplementary discourses - are highly influential in hermeneutical literary studies.

The second part deals with changes in the notion of time in the modern and so-called post-modern era. It focuses especially on non-linearity, the increasing importance of historical time in the natural sciences and on the effect of this tendency on the analysis of highly complex structures outside of the natural sciences. In the third part of the publication concrete examples of the adaption of chaos theory for literary studies are examined - especially their epistemological interest, their position within the framework of the discipline and their interdisciplinary potential. This part elucidates the potential of focusing on the literary text and its particularities under the premises of chaos theory and how such an interdisciplinary approach helps to bridge the cap between the natural sciences and the humanities.

In the final part of the publication the social and cultural relevance of historical knowledge as a frame of reference in times of increasing (temporal and social) complexity is examined. With reference to the explanatory power of hermeneutical procedures "chaostheoretical literary studies" are proposed as a working hypothesis. The approach is intended as a model which can be integrated into cultural analysis and not provides descriptions and explanations for highly complex literary texts, hypertexts and virtual realities, but also regards scientific and technical production and distribution of knowledge as an important part of culture and thus integrates it into its analysis.

Abstract

This Yearbook of the German Language Institute aims to call to mind the traditions of linguistics in cultural studies and at the same time to document the connections between linguistics and modern research paths in cultural studies such as the theory of cognition and discourse analysis. In addition, the papers illuminate the linguistic turn in literary and historical studies. Thus the volume presents the foundations and theoretical and methodological approaches to linguistics as a cultural study, together with examples related to practice.

Abstract

With its expert seminars for alumnis abroad the Georg-August-University Göttingen wants to strengthen its contact with the alumni in the long term and create a global network. This volume is the result of a seminar on "Germany and the Wende (Change) in Literature, Language and Media". The participants were scientists, writers and filmmakers with their own views on contemporary German history and the reunification as well as alumni from China, Japan and Korea who are involved in their home countries in the dissemination of German language and culture. The seminar and the title discuss a specifically German experience, the reunification („Die Wende“) as central theme which also has an actual and high relevance in Korea and China.

Abstract

Military force projection is the self-reliant capacity to strike from mainland ports, bases and airfields to protect Australia’s sovereignty as well as more distant national interests. Force projection is not just a flex of military muscle in times of emergency or the act of dispatching forces. It is a cycle of force preparation, command, deployment, protection, employment, sustainment, rotation, redeployment and reconstitution. If the Australian Defence Force consistently gets this cycle wrong, then there is something wrong with Australia’s defence.

This monograph is a force projection audit of four Australian regional force projections in the late 1980s and the 1990s—valid measures of competence. It concludes that Australia is running out of luck and time.

The Rudd Government has commissioned a new Defence White paper. This monograph is Exhibit A for change

Abstract

Abstract

Throughout history, those arrested for vagrancy have generally been poor men and women, often young, able-bodied, unemployed, and homeless. Most histories of vagrancy have focused on the European and American experiences. This is the first book to consider global laws, homelessness, and the historical processes they accompanied. Vagrancy and homelessness are used to examine the migration of labor, social and governmental responses, poverty through charity, welfare, and prosecution. Cast Out includes discussions of the lives of the underclass, strategies for surviving and escaping poverty, the criminalization of poverty by the state, the rise of welfare and development programs, the relationship between imperial powers and colonized peoples, and the struggle to achieve independence after colonial rule.

Abstract

High-resolution regional ensemble climate simulations with the regional climate model COSMO-CLM are performed for Southwest Germany to study the sensitivity of meteorological and hydrological variables to parameter settings. The soil-vegetation model VEG3D is implemented into COSMO-CLM to assess the impact of the lower atmospheric boundary on simulation results. A statistical-dynamical downscaling method is tested to shorten the simulation time for regional climate studies.
