Abstract

An examination of media and technology use by school-aged youth with disabilities, with an emphasis on media use at home. Most research on media use by young people with disabilities focuses on the therapeutic and rehabilitative uses of technology; less attention has been paid to their day-to-day encounters with media and technology—the mundane, sometimes pleasurable and sometimes frustrating experiences of “hanging out, messing around, and geeking out.” In this report, Meryl Alper attempts to repair this omission, examining how school-aged children with disabilities use media for social and recreational purposes, with a focus on media use at home. In doing so, she reframes common assumptions about the relationship between young people with disabilities and technology, and she points to areas for further study into the role of new media in the lives of these young people, their parents, and their caregivers.Alper considers the notion of “screen time” and its inapplicability in certain cases—when, for example, an iPad is a child's primary mode of communication. She looks at how young people with various disabilities use media to socialize with caregivers, siblings, and friends, looking more closely at the stereotype of the socially isolated young person with disabilities. And she examines issues encountered by parents in selecting, purchasing, and managing media for youth with such specific disabilities as ADHD and autism. She considers not only children's individual preferences and needs but also external factors, including the limits of existing platforms, content, and age standards.

Abstract

Based on eleven months of field work (2009-2011), this book analyzes the situation of youth in urban Gulu, Northern Uganda, in the aftermath of the war between the Lord’s Resistance Army and the Ugandan Government (1986-2006). Specifically, it focuses on the generation that was born and grew up during the 20-year war: How do members of this generation perceive and evaluate socio-cultural changes which occurred in Acholi society throughout the war years? How do they imagine their future society? And how do they react to the expectations directed at them by their elders? In order to answer these questions, the book draws on rich ethnographic material. It provides an in-depth analysis of how imaginations of the post-war society are contested and negotiated between different groups of social actors – youth and elders, men and women as well as local, national and international actors. While some try to re-establish former cultural practices and conventions and call for a ‘retraditionalization’ of Acholi society, others lobby for ‘modernization’ and attempt to establish ‘new’ social structures, values and norms which are strongly influenced by local understandings of ‘the Western culture’. The book presents numerous examples of the multiple and complex ways young people strategically position themselves in these debates and make use of the various discourses on culture, tradition and modernity in their negotiations of generational, gender, family, and peer-to-peer relations.

Abstract

The current political discourse on the "further development and control of child and youth welfare" attempts to discredit and repress outpatient help for upbringing. The present "plea" interferes professionally and politically in this debate. The authors provide a critical assessment of the current situation of child and youth welfare and in particular of educational assistance and trace the process of the debate on the "further development and control of educational assistance". On the basis of detailed description and analysis of the two basic approaches to action in social work (social work in and with the social space on the one hand and individual casework, e.g. educational assistance, on the other), it deals with the question of whether the controversy alleged by politicians between the two approaches to action is technically justified. In this context, the two approaches to action are presented in their history and development and in their different conceptions. In addition to a clear plea for the preservation and consistently professional design of educational assistance in the context of life-world orientation, this also leads to the realisation that social work in general - and especially in times of neo-liberalisation of the social - is subject to the risk of individualisation. On the other hand, within both approaches it is also possible today to fend off this tendency and to act as a critical force in this society. In addition to the technical, ideological and political examination of the new control intentions of politics vis-à-vis aid for education, this book contains detailed descriptions and discussions on various individual topics, among others: - Technical characteristics, action orientations and process design of the action approaches "Outpatient individual case assistance" and "Work in and with the social space" (8.4 and 9.3, 9.4) - What shares does social work itself have in its partly unprofessional state? (Section 4.4) - Presentation and discussion of the concept of "social space orientation" (8.5) - Individualisation: What is this? How can it be avoided? (Chapter 8)

Abstract

How do professionals in open youth work deal with violence among young people? On the basis of an ethnographic study based on Grounded Theory, the author points out different processing strategies. The results show that professionals primarily interpret and deal with violence as a risk. It becomes clear that the action strategies of the social workers refer to approaches of sanctioning pedagogy on the one hand and youth work as education on the other. The ethnographic study in the style of Grounded Theory with a professional theoretical perspective was conducted in five different youth clubs over a period of one and a half years. Although violence between young people is relatively rare, it is omnipresent in the thinking of professional forces as a scenario that could develop. The presentation of typical situations from youth clubs shows that they constantly act in the sense of violence prevention close to everyday life and try to prevent a violent development through targeted action strategies. Within this framework, it becomes clear that two patterns of professional problem construction are central - on the one hand, following the sanctioning pedagogy, on the other hand, an understanding of youth work as education. Against this background, the interpretation and action strategies of skilled workers were discussed.
