Abstract

“Schule der Gesellschaft” Knowledge systems in Zurich educational practices between 1771 and 1834

The great social and political revolutions of 1798 and 1831 fueled efforts at radical restructuring of education policy. There were, however, gaps between the new norms and traditional local practices. Official and intellectual setting of new standards clashed with local and regional needs and conceptions of schooling. In a process of gradual adjustment, locally varying mixtures of new prescriptions and traditional approaches emerged.
Making use of voluminous source material, consisting principally of answers to school surveys from 1771 and 1779, as well as reports of school authorities from 1834, the study provides a comparative view across several hundred Zurich schools. The author conveys a nuanced portrayal of educational practices at the turn of the 19th century. The results of the study reveal similarities in schooling approaches across the region, and show the societal knowledge system underlying them. Investigating schools requires examining the surrounding society as well.

Abstract

Am Übergang von der Schule in den Beruf werden wichtige Weichen gestellt, die den weiteren Lebenslauf eines Menschen vorbereiten. Dazu werden in diesem Band neue Ergebnisse der vielfältigen Transitionsforschung aus der ganzen Schweiz vorgestellt, die sich an verschiedenen Disziplinen wie der Psychologie, Soziologie, Erziehungswissenschaften oder Bildungsökonomie orientieren. Dafür werden theoretische Grundlagen und empirische Evidenzen für die Analyse und Steuerung bedeutsamer Passagen im Lebenslauf entwickelt. Soweit möglich werden auch Handlungsempfehlungen für die Akteure der Berufsbildung in der Schweiz diskutiert, die zugleich auch in anderen Ländern von Interesse sein dürften.

Abstract

This study examines the internal discourse on religious education (RE) at two secondary schools in Vienna using a qualitative empirical method. At these schools RE have reached their oraganisational limits. The study has made a major contribution to religious education sensitive to contexts by exploring the most times implicit attitudes towards religion and RE from teachers and from members of the school community board.

Abstract

With the "opening of universities" to "non-traditional students", education policy demands for far-reaching reforms are addressed to German universities. How do universities meet these demands and what curricular-didactical considerations result from them? The authors take up this question as a productive moment in development-oriented action based on didactics of higher education and explore the potential - both for changes and for stabilisations in the area of higher education teaching - in an exemplary manner. Against the background of the framework conditions of a university of applied sciences, they discuss the possibilities of a target group-specific, curricular-didactic further development of part-time, social-scientifically oriented study programmes and present further reflections.
