Abstract

This volume puts forward several reflections about the idea of age and gender in Ancient Greece. It brings together seven studies by Spanish, Portuguese and Argentinian researchers. The essays gathered here are based upon information from different sources: literary, iconographic, epigraphic, and social. They do not focus on the citizen, i.e. on the adult male as the citizen, according to Aristotle’s definition, but on children, elderly, maidens. Even the field of male prostitution is explored. It is a study which, based on the abundant bibliography which has developed over recent years on these issues, offers an overall reflection on the margins of citizenship seen from the parameters of gender and age.

Abstract

This book encompasses papers presented at the XXVII Classical Studies Week (2014) of the Federal University of Ceará. The Symposium was consecrated to the bimillennial celebration of Augustus’ death, and proposed discussions about cultural dialogues between Greece and Rome under Augustan ideology. How do rhetoric, philosophy, literature and history engage in such dialogues and in such controversial ideology? The papers in this book highlight aspects of that discussion, and are divided into three sections: Section I contemplates philosophy, rhetoric and politics, particularly in the relationship between young Octavian and Cicero; Section II contemplates Augustan literature (Horace, Virgil, Tibullus and Ovid); finally, Section III approaches history and Greek comedy through Plutarch.

Abstract

The Greek Anthology, a compilation of epigrams from the Classical, Hellenistic and Byzantine periods, is the larger epigrammatic garland in Greek language that we possess. Organized in modern times in 16 books, it depends mostly on two manuscripts, the so-called Palatinus (Palatinus Graecus 23 + Parisinus Graecus Suppl. 384 – X cent.) and Maximus Planudes’ autograph (Marcianus Graecus 481 – beginnings of the XIV). This volume, the first of a planned series, offers the translation of two of those 16 books, thematically united by the fact that both gather ecphrastic epigrams, i.e. poems composed upon plastic works of art. With Book II, work of Cristodoros from the beginnings of the VI century AD, the reader can walk through the statuary collection held at the famous baths of Zeuxippus in Constantinople. As for Book III, it gathers 19 anonymous epigrams on the pillars of the Apollonis Temple in Cyzicus (built in the II cent. BC), which must also had been composed in the VI century AD. Altogether, Books II and III end-up being a testimony of the use of poetry with political and touristic purposes. Besides a thematic and linguistic introduction, which does not intent to be extensive, the translation also presents some interpretative notes, especially related to myth.

Abstract

Comes from the 10th century the oldest codex with the treatise On the Sublime. For a long time attributed to Cassius Longinus (third century ), the text is now generally considered a first century work, written by an anonymous or a Dionysius Longinus whose life and work is unknown. Ignored, as it seems, in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the text came to meet its editio princeps only in 1554, in Basel and by the hand of Francesco Robortello. It was then successively edited and translated, first into Latin and later into several European languages, starting with the famous French version of Boileau that for a long time was the main source for the knowledge of the treatise in Europe. Peri Hypsous moves away from the stylistic approach of ancient rhetorical books and presents a definition of Sublime as a quality of discourse which produces in the hearers and readers not persuasion but wonder and ecstasy. It is precisely this idea of wonder and shudder that has inspired the works of Burke (A Philosophical Enquiry into the origin of our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful, 1757) and Kant, by whose hands the treatise On the Sublime entered the history of Western Aesthetics.

Abstract

This book, prepared as a step in the academic cooperation between the CECH – Centro de Estudos Clássicos e Humanísticos of the UC – and the PRAGMA – Program of Ancient Philosophical Studies of the UFRJ -, includes several studies on the reception of Greco-Latin themes and models in the literature and culture of Portugal and Brazil. Its originality is a consequence of putting together two different cultures and several disciplines, as researchers come from Literature, Philosophy and Ancient History. The period considered, from the 16th to the 20th centuries, allows a global view of the cultural evolution of the two countries, in a good part made in common.

Abstract

This work consists of the transcription, analysis and interpretation of two unpublished eighteenth-century conventual recipes, which were compared with other counterparts in near periods, produced within the same scope and among the laity. The course undertaken aimed at assessing the real or imaginary originality of the recipes prepared in religious houses of the Modern Age and permitted to answer several questions, namely: the extent to which the conventual recipes were created in this scope or were taken to the monasteries by nuns, friars, monastic nuns, monks, maids and servants? Since the ingredients and cooking techniques used in religious houses were known in the places where lay people were, especially among confectioners, whose regiments were clear about the requirements to obtain letter, how can we explain the frenzy, often excessive, the conventual designation applied to so many and so frenetic recipes? In fact monks, monastic nuns, nuns, friars, maids and servants had time to cook and it is possible that many, or at least some, appreciated the preparation of savoury dishes and especially sweets. However, wasn’t the offer and commerce of sweets the most responsible for the exaltation of the conventual designation, in the absence of pastries taking place in the 17th and 18th centuries, and confectioneries whose fame would spread out to the Kingdom? Are we dealing with the creation of truly conventual sweets or sheer preparations of recipes originally produced in the kitchens of big houses and subsequently taken to the monasteries, such as so many other meat and fish recipes? The analysis and the interpretation of the sources made very clear that the overwhelming majority of the recipes prepared in religious houses was hardly original, we just have to compare these recipes with those circulating both handwritten and printed in other recipe books of the time. On the other hand, the alleged secrecy that should involve the aforementioned conventual recipes - and this is evident in some female recipe books - was broken, in such a manner that lay cookbooks include recipes with names of some religious houses, which does not necessarily mean these recipes have originated there but that they were prepared successfully there and the subject of appreciation by those who had the opportunity to taste them.
