Abstract

This book provides a detailed historical analysis of the Swiss Parliament. It sheds light on how the profiles of parliamentarians have evolved over a century, and recounts the various legislative reforms affecting their status. The author analyses the impact of these reforms on the collective biography of the members of Parliament. The rich data allow for an empirically grounded reflection on how well the parliamentary composition represents the population, for instance in terms of their gender or level of education, and an understanding of the processes of democratization and professionalization of the institution. This research has received a prize from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Lausanne and an incentive award from the Swiss Society for Parliamentary Questions. Andrea Pilotti has a PhD in Political Sciences from the University of Lausanne. He is Research Manager at the Research Observatory for Regional Politics and member of the Swiss Elite Observatory at the University of Lausanne’s Faculty of Social and Political sciences.

Abstract

Through the paths of three resorts, this book examines how the areas af-fected by tourism and mobility change, and questions the notion of territorial value. The development of territories is understood through their mobility: the mobility not only of people but also of knowledge and information, as well as markets. Today, in a "hypermobile" world, places must be connect-ed. These networks lead to a standardization of territories. However, to at-tract tourists, media attention, and investors, territories must stand out! It is this process of staging and construction of value that this book presents.

Abstract

Gambling is now a legitimate sector of the entertainment industry. In the 1990s, opposition emerged in North America but failed to build a social movement on a large scale. This book specifically examines one of these coalitions in Vancouver, Cana-da. The local anti-gambling movement is analyzed as an expression of civic and political engagement. The study focuses specifically on the process of denouncing gambling practices and their conversion into a "public issue." The author analyzes a highly relevant current social debate.
