Abstract

Concrete is widely used because of its versatility, affordability, and availability of raw materials, strength, and durability. Urban development that took place through the world in the last few decades yielded significant developments for concrete technology. The term high-performance concrete (HPC) is relatively new, and it refers to many properties such as strength, durability, sound and heat insulation, waterproofing, and side advantages such as air purification, self-cleaning, etc. Researchers and engineers are constantly working for improving concrete properties. This book provides the state of the art on recent progress in the high-performance concrete applications written by researchers and experts of the field. The book should be useful to graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers in related fields.

Abstract

Drawing Futures brings together international designers and artists for speculations in contemporary drawing for art and architecture. Despite numerous developments in technological manufacture and computational design that provide new grounds for designers, the act of drawing still plays a central role as a vehicle for speculation. There is a rich and long history of drawing tied to innovations in technology as well as to revolutions in our philosophical understanding of the world. Drawing Futures focuses on the discussion of how the field of drawing may expand synchronously alongside technological and computational developments. The book coincides with an international conference of the same name, taking place at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, in November 2016. Bringing together practitioners from many creative fields, the book discusses how drawing is changing in relation to new technologies for the production and dissemination of ideas.

Abstract

The term “Cyberlearning” is used in the United States to describe a community of researchers, largely funded by the US National Science Foundation, who are exploring the integration of computer science research with learning sciences research. The Cyberlearning community is parallel to the EC-TEL community and the purpose of this poster is to foster mutual engagement between the communities. The paper describes the origin of the term, the conception of the field, the kinds of research being conducted, and some of the exemplary projects. The paper will also introduce the Center for Innovative Research in Cyberlearning (CIRCL), which is the hub of the knowledge network (research community) for cyberlearning and hosts a useful collection of resources.

Abstract

Interdisciplinarity is a sine qua non condition for any modern endeavour, a reason for the International Conference on Interdisciplinary Studies (ICIS 2016) to promote new and emerging research topics and interdisciplinary collaborations. During the event experiences about how interdisciplinary research is carried out were summarized and the demand for interdisciplinary research and innovation was investigated. The 2016 edition aimed also to get an in-depth view of the solutions to provide the skills required for real advancement of our society, to emphasize the social need for creative thinking and innovation and to investigate the role creative thinking plays in producing new, integrative knowledge. The present volume summarizes the most relevant papers accepted for presentation during ICIS 2016, held at Ovidius University of Constanta, Romania, between 10 and 11 June 2016.

Abstract

Imaging Identity presents potent reflections on the human condition through the prism of portraiture. Taking digital imaging technologies and the dynamic and precarious dimensions of contemporary identity as critical reference points, these essays consider why portraits continue to have such galvanising appeal and perform fundamental work across so many social settings. This multidisciplinary enquiry brings together artists, art historians, art theorists and anthropologists working with a variety of media. Authors look beyond conventional ideas of the portrait to the wider cultural contexts, governmental practices and intimate experiences that shape relationships between persons and pictures. Their shared purpose centres on a commitment to understanding the power of images to draw people into their worlds. Imaging Identity tracks a fundamental symbiosis — to grapple with the workings of images is to understand something vital of what it is to be human.

Abstract

Anthropology has been playing a central role in questioning the supposedobjective and apolitical character of scientific knowledge by underlining the socio-cultural contextand history of the constitution of any scientific theory. From differentresearch universes, anthropologists have sought to demonstrate how scienceand politics are composed, juxtaposed and produced in the daily work ofsocial actors. In the wake of what Donna Haraway (1995) pointed out, it isthere would not be the "science" look, but the look of the scientists - always locatedin a space (which is not only geographical, but temporal, cultural, markedby social differences, etc.). It is therefore based on the premise that science andare mutually constituted and from specific contexts. FollowingIn this line, this collection explores how certain knowledges are constituted and legitimized, how technologies of government come into action - and, through practicesof the social agents, are (re) formulated - and how through such devicesnew categories of analysis, social markers, populations andsubjectivities (FONSECA, MACHADO, 2015)
