Abstract

By highlighting relations between experimental and theoretical work, this volume explores new ways of addressing one of the central challenges in the study of language and cognition. The articles bring together work by leading scholars and younger researchers in psychology, linguistics and philosophy. An introductory chapter lays out the background on concept composition, a problem that is stimulating much new research in cognitive science. Researchers in this interdisciplinary domain aim to explain how meanings of complex expressions are derived from simple lexical concepts and to show how these meanings connect to concept representations. Traditionally, much of the work on concept composition has been carried out within separate disciplines, where cognitive psychologists have concentrated on concept representations, and linguists and philosophers have focused on the meaning and use of logical operators. This volume demonstrates an important change in this situation, where convergence points between these three disciplines in cognitive science are emerging and are leading to new findings and theoretical insights.

Abstract

"For nearly half a century formal semantics has been a prominent area in linguistic theory, developed in a fruitful collaboration among linguists, logicians and philosophers. Formal semantics is sometimes regarded with reluctance (even dreaded) due to its mathematical precision and the apparent complexity of its symbolism. This textbook —the first one of this scope in French— provides a relaxed self-contained introduction to the domain, allowing the reader autonomous progressive study from the basic central concepts to significant innovations that have shaped the domain since Montague’s seminal work. Through its chapters, the book provides acquaintance with elements of scientific methodology generally used in formal semantics. The six chapters, completed with solved exercises, gradually move from basic notions in logic and model-theoretic semantics, to quantification, temporal and modal logic, intensionality, and typed λ-calculus, culminating in compositional semantic analysis at the syntax-semantics interface. This introduction will be supplemented with a second volume that would focus on applications and advances in the field which extend the scope of the formalism.

Abstract

Systematic variation in form between semantic equivalents across languages is a key explanandum of linguistic theory. Two contrasting views of the role of lexical semantics in the analysis of such variation can be found in the literature: (1) uniformity, whereby lexical meaning is universal, and morphosyntactic variation arises from idiosyncratic differences in the inventory and phonological shape of language-particular functional material, and (2) transparency, whereby systematic variation in form arises from systematic variation in the meaning of basic lexical items. This volume contrasts these views as applied to the empirical domain of property concept sentences—sentences expressing adjectival predication and their translational equivalents across languages. Demonstrating that property concept sentences vary systematically between possessive and predicative form, the authors propose a transparentist analysis of this variation that links it to the lexical denotations of basic property concept lexemes. At the heart of the analysis are qualities: mass-like model-theoretic objects that closely resemble scales. The authors contrast their transparentist analysis with uniformitarian alternatives, demonstrating its theoretical and empirical advantages. They then show that the proposed theory of qualities can account for interesting and novel observations in two central domains of grammatical theory: the theory of lexical categories, and the theory of mass nouns. The overall results highlight the importance of the lexicon as a locus of generalizations about the limits of crosslinguistic variation.

Abstract

For many years, an abstract, amodal semantic magnitude representation, largely independent of verbal linguistic representations, has been viewed as the core numerical or mathematical representation This assumption has been substantially challenged in recent years. Linguistic properties affect not only verbal representations of numbers, but also numerical magnitude representation, spatial magnitude representations, calculation, parity representation, place-value representation and even early number acquisition. Thus, we postulate that numerical and arithmetic processing are not fully independent of linguistic processing. This is not to say, that in patients, magnitude processing cannot function independently of linguistic processing we just suppose, these functions are connected in the functioning brain. So far, much research about linguistic influences on numerical cognition has simply demonstrated that language influences number without investigating the level at which a particular language influence operates. After an overview, we present new findings on language influences on seven language levels: - Conceptual: Conceptual properties of language- Syntactic: The grammatical structure of languages beyond the word level influences- Semantic: The semantic meaning or existence of words- Lexical: The lexical composition of words, in particular number words- Visuo-spatial-orthographic: Orthographic properties, such as the writing/reading direction of a language- Phonological: Phonological/phonetic properties of languages- Other language-related skills: Verbal working memory and other cognitive skills related to language representationsWe hope that this book provides a new and structured overview on the exciting influences of linguistic processing on numerical cognition at almost all levels of language processing.

Abstract

This book focuses on the development of the law of conspiracy in England from the thirteenth to the early eighteenth century. The historiography of the law of conspiracy has adopted an unmistakably doctrinal approach to this topic which has produced a treasure trove of legal sources. By borrowing concepts from cognitive linguistics, this research will shed light upon new aspects of these sources that the doctrinal approach could not reveal. It will show how certain conducts were lexicalized as a conspiracy in the Middle Ages. It will also show how these terms are involved in the lexicalization of the crime of treason and how through a process of conceptual blending the action upon the case in the nature of conspiracy rose as an action separate from the medieval conspiracy. Finally, it will be seen how the modern offense of conspiracy emerged out of the process of conceptual blending through analogies with treason and the action upon the case in the nature of conspiracy.------ Este libro se centra en la genealogía del delito de conspiración en Inglaterra desde el siglo XIII hasta comienzos del XVIII. La historiografía acerca del mismo ha sido de carácter marcadamente doctrinal, aunque ha producido un valioso acopio de fuentes. Haciendo uso de conceptos de la lingüística cognitiva, esta investigación revela aspectos de la genealogía del concepto de conspiración que el enfoque doctrinal no podía percibir. Se muestra cómo ciertas conductas fueron lexicalizadas como conspiración en la Edad Media, cómo el mismo término aparece en la conceptualización del delito de traición y cómo a través de un proceso de integración conceptual se produjo la action upon the case in the nature of conspiracy diferente de la conspiración medieval. Finalmente, también se verá cómo el moderno sentido de conspiración surgió a través del mismo proceso de integración conceptual que permitía establecer analogías con el delito de traición, así como con la action upon the case in the nature of conspiracy.
