Abstract

What challenges do mothers face after treating alcohol dependence? The study conducted by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the Forel Clinic focuses on mothers who have undergone in-patient or day-care treatment. The results of the qualitative study provide an insight into the lives of these mothers returning to their everyday lives.

Abstract

This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book presents insights into the lived realities of children with disabilities in primary schools in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It examines specific cultural and societal characteristics of Ethiopia that influence the education of children with disabilities. The book presents findings drawn from interviews with, and participant observation of the schoolchildren, family members, teachers and other “experts”, and places these findings in a cultural-historical context. The multidimensional approach taken allows for, on the one hand, the provision of a historical grounding of the book, explaining the main historical junctures and their implications for education, and the discussion of the role of culture and society as barriers and facilitators of education. On the other hand, it gives the book a more personal angle, allowing the reader to gain insight into what it means to feel like a family, develop a sense of belonging, and tr ying to move toward educational equity.

Abstract

Disability Human Rights Law is an emerging field. It is an amalgamation of human rights law, disability studies, and disability rights law. It views rights in a novel way, opening a new line of scholarly inquiry. It sees rights as they apply to the individual, with regard to the individual’s particular abilities, needs, and circumstances.Disability Human Rights Law represents a shift in the field of human rights. The traditional, and often archaic, rights boundaries are broken down. Civil and political rights exist entwined with social, economic, and cultural rights. The rights of the community and the rights of the individual are not always distinguishable and are often dependent upon one another. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is the epitome of this shift and the epicenter of a new wave of rights protection. This book focuses on this new field. The aim of the book is to begin to explore the potential of Disability Human Rights Law to transform modern human rights law.

Abstract

Since the concept of micro total analysis systems (µ-TAS) has been advocated, various kinds of micro/nano devices have been developed by researchers in many fields, such as in chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electric engineering, biology, and medicine, among others. The analytical techniques for small sample volumes, using the micro/nano devices, heavily impacted the fields of biology, medicine and biotechnology, as well as analytical chemistry. Some applications (DNA analysis, point-of-care testing (POCT), etc.) are already commercially available, and various applications will soon be put into practical use.In this Special Issue, we focus on chemical and biochemical analyses (analytical and sensing techniques) using the various types of the micro/nano devices, including micro/nanofluidic devices, paper-based devices, digital microfluidics, and biochip (DNA, protein, cell) arrays. We are also interested in hyphenated devices with other conventional analytical instruments, and the pretreatment devices and components (valve, pump, etc.) for analysis/assay.

Abstract

"The Australian vegetation is the end result of a remarkable history of climate change, latitudinal change, continental isolation, soil evolution, interaction with an evolving fauna, fire and most recently human impact. This book presents a detailed synopsis of the critical events that led to the evolution of the unique Australian flora and the wide variety of vegetational types contained within it. The first part of the book details the past continental relationships of Australia, its palaeoclimate, fauna and the evolution of its landforms since the rise to dominance of the angiosperms at the beginning of the Cretaceous period. A detailed summary of the palaeobotanical record is then presented. The palynological record gives an overview of the vegetation and the distribution of important taxa within it, while the complementary macrofossil record is used to trace the evolution of critical taxa. This book will interest graduate students and researchers interested in the evolution of the flora of this fascinating continent."
