Abstract

Since the beginning of times, pain treatment has been the motive of research giving birth to multiple groups of pharmacological families and therapies. Pain perception is a construction built over the biological phenomenon of signal transduction surrounded by different factors such as gender, age, and sociocultural status, among others. The concept of pain as the solely biological manifestation of defense is nowadays considered as a narrow-minded view of this topic. In this regard concepts such as newborns feel no pain or older people complain about everything therefore should not be paid attention when referring pain, are being left behind in the understanding that pain alleviation is a human right and everybody feeling pain should be helped for its relief. This book comprises many aspects of pain treatment and the drugs involved in it. From old analgesics with new mechanisms of action for pain alleviation to analgesics potential for diminishing oxidative stress; from pharmacological therapies to electrical ones, going through alternative medicine; and from pain treatment in dentistry to chronic pain therapies, also boarding the treatment of migraine, different experts share their knowledge on the topic.

Abstract

For thousands of years, pharmacological knowledge coming from natural remedies, has been handed down from generation to generation, without any awareness of the ways in which preparations are made to face diseases. The advent of pharmaceutical chemistry and of the modern drug industry turned that lack of awareness into a scientific knowledge that changed the destiny of the human race. The twenty-eight chapters of this book, are taken from the lectures held by Professor Ettore Novellino every year in his course “Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Toxicology 2”. The first chapters address the basic notions of drugs, homeostasis, pharmacopoeia, and receptor; then, the different pharmaceutical classes are introduced by analyzing their pharmacological and chemical aspects. In particular, the structural study of the interaction between drugs and receptors or biological enzymes gives the fundamentals to connect the chemical and stereochemical properties of a compound family, with the biological activity, a correlation better known as Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR). Several examples of the synthesis of some of the most historically renown drugs, provided at the end of each chapter, integrate the book.

Abstract

The book ""A Critical Evaluation of Vitamin D - Basic Overview"" targets the physiological, biochemical and immunological aspects of vitamin D, including principles, mechanisms and clinical significance. This book covers four sections: 'Vitamin D on Physical and Physiological Activities', 'Vitamin D on Biochemical and Immunological Activities', 'Vitamin D on Musculoskeletal and Neurological System' and 'Vitamin D on Reproductive System'. Each of these sections is interwoven with the theoretical aspects and experimental techniques of basic and clinical sciences. This book will be a significant source to students, scientists, physicians, healthcare professionals and also other members of this society who are interested in exploring the role of vitamin D in human life.

Abstract

Vitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin, also called as ""sunshine vitamin"" is derived mostly from sun exposure and food, and for normal activation, it has to undergo two hydroxylation reactions. Vitamin D affects more than 2000 genes in the body. Serum level of 25(OH) D is an ideal indicator of vitamin D status in our body. Vitamin D deficiency leads to various diseases. On a therapeutic point of view, vitamin D helps to treat many diseases. The book ""A Critical Evaluation of Vitamin D - Clinical Overview"" targets the principles, mechanisms, and clinical significance of vitamin D. This book covers four sections: ""Vitamin D in Cardiovascular and Renal Diseases"", ""Vitamin D in Age and Neurological Diseases"", ""Vitamin D and Cancer"" and ""Therapeutic Measurements of Vitamin D"". Each of these sections is interwoven with the theoretical aspects and experimental techniques of basic and clinical sciences. This book will be a significant source to students, scientists, physicians, healthcare professionals and also other members of this society who are interested in exploring the role of vitamin D in human life.

[Vitamin D can be considered as vitamin of ""defense"" since it cures several diseases. - Sivakumar Gowder]

Abstract

The goal of any novel drug delivery system is to provide therapeutic benefits to the patients by increasing duration of drug action, reducing dosing frequency, and controlling drug release rate at the target site, thereby reducing unwanted side effects. Advanced Technology for Delivering Therapeutics is a reference book that covers recent developments in the field of drug delivery science and technology. The purpose of this book is to bring together descriptions of some selective technologies including new and promising nanotechnology currently being investigated for drug delivery applications. This book is a useful source of information for graduate and post-graduate students of pharmacy and biomedical science; pharmaceutical & other researchers involved in designing newer drug delivery systems both in academia and industry.
