Abstract

Abstract

"Chosen Children" examines the role of the adoption marketplace in shaping how transracial adoptive families are sorted and matched, and analyzes what these practices suggest about race in the United States. In contrast to previous work on race and adoption markets that focus on the experiences of adoptive parents, Raleigh's project focuses on adoption workers--social workers, attorneys, and counselors. Taking a market approach that treats adoptive parents as consumers and children as commodities, Raleigh brings together interviews with adoption practitioners, participant observation at adoption information sessions, and adoption statistics in order to demonstrate how the downturn in supply of "adoptable honorary white children" (which she defines as Asian and hispanic children) led to the increased popularity of the transracial adoption of foreign-born and biracial black children.

Abstract

Drawing in contributions from the United States, the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland and Aotearoa New Zealand, this book seeks to foreground shifting experiences of teenage pregnancy and parenting in time and space. In the process, the work cuts across enduring ‘stigma’ contests and dominant discourses which seek to capture, understand and render fixable the ‘problem’ of teenage pregnancy and parenting, whichever discourse is being privileged.

Abstract

"Economic and sociological research has long shown that the widespread presence of criminal organizations in the territory is a factor that contrasts economic and social development. This is just one aspect of the complex relationship that exists between local economic dynamics and the illegal behavior of social actors. The relationship between social norms and legal norms, the quality and quantity of social capital, the bonds of trust between the actors and the legitimization of the state, the local power systems, the certainty of the sanctions, are other aspects that certainly contribute to create the conditions that favor illegal responses to the crisis. The book seeks to highlight how legality and illegality present facets and interdependencies that can't simply be traced back to the moral categories of good and evil, but need to be analyzed in a multifactorial perspective."

Abstract

"Prison has always been an attractive object for study in the field of sociology. Few other areas of modern society demonstrate social reality’s fundamental ideas so clearly and obviously than prison. Social deviance and stigma, ostracism and integration, control and discipline, power and inequality are all examples of key sociological concepts that are crystalized in daily life in a prison environment.Fengslende sosiologi. Makt, straff og identitet i Trondheims fengsler (Captivating Sociology. Power, Punishment and Identity in Trondheim’s Prisons) presents twelve scholarly, peer-reviewed chapters that explore various aspects of prison as a social phenomenon, both as a part of and an expression of society. The majority of the contributions build on empirical studies at maximum and minimum-security prisons in Trondheim, but the analyses have a broader relevance – both empirically and theoretically – for our understanding of power, punishment and identity in Norwegian penal institutions. Most of the contributors are associated with the Department of Sociology and Political Science at NTNU, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and the department’s project ‘Fengslende sosiologi’ (‘Captivating Sociology’). Several of the texts are by former master’s students in sociology and present further analyses based on their master’s projects. This anthology will be of interest to scholars and practitioners in the field as well as students and others interested in prison as a social institution and penal institutions in general."

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

After theoretically framing the subject of money, starting from the Philosophy of Money by Georg Simmel and the most recent contributions about sociology of money, the volume proposes a framework of study based on practice theory, with the aim of answering two questions of deep sociological and methodological interest: what money really is and how it is studied.

Abstract

The transformation of hospitals into companies is repeatedly negotiated as a consistent rationalization strategy. From a sociological perspective, on the other hand, it becomes clear that the much-discussed ¼-economization½ of hospitals is a contradictory process. Robin Mohan traces the history of the hospital through a social theory of economization based on Marx, Weber and Bourdieu, which raises the contradiction between utility value and exchange value as the connecting leitmotiv. The analysis is supplemented by a sociology of labor study, which reconstructs how the economization processes are viewed from the point of view of the nursing staff.

Abstract

"At the beginning of the 1960s, Swedish researchers started a sociological study of all children born in Stockholm in 1953, Project Metropolitan. This book describes the project’s at times dramatic history, where issues of personal integrity and the role of social sciences were heavily debated. These discussions were fueled by the rapid and far-reaching digitalization in society at large and also within social sciences. As such, Project Metropolitan came to symbolize the benefits and potential risks related to an expanding body of research based on large groups of individuals and multiple register data sources. At the outset, the project’s founders sought to answer the following question: “Why do some get on better in life than others?” One of the main aims of the project was to study the long-term impact of conditions in childhood. The book therefore also includes an updated presentation of the main findings, as they have been conveyed in over 160 publications to date. These publications cover a wide array of topics and phenomena such as social mobility and education, substance abuse and crime, health and ill-health, peer influences and family relations, and adult lives of adopted children.Today Project Metropolitan is known as the “Stockholm Birth Cohort Multigenerational Study (SBC Multigen)” and is still in full vigor. From its original group of 15,000 children, the study has become multi-generational by adding data about their parents, siblings, children, nieces and nephews. As they approach their late 60s, it will also be possible to follow these “children” into retirement and old-age.In the concluding chapter the author discusses some of the challenges contemporary social research is facing. What are the current threats to academic freedom and what opportunities do the unique data registers in countries like Sweden provide?"
