Abstract

This collection explores the complex world of early cinema in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The story of how cinema established itself in China has not been well-understood. Cultural models for cinema-going and industry practices varied widely across China. By looking at several centers of cinematic activity, going beyond commercial fiction film to include non-fiction films (such as educational film), and taking on Cantonese as well as Mandarin productions. Beyond the Silver Screens presents early cinema in China in a new light Highlights Hong Kong, Taipei and Guangzhou as well as better-know examples from Shanghai, these essays foreground the cinema’s relationships with imperialism and colonialism, examining how cinematic culture established itself by adapting to distinctive local social and artistic practices, emphasizing the potency of cinema as a sociocultural institution.

Abstract

Du cinéma qui naît à la fin du XIXᵉ siècle à celui qui s’expose aujourd’hui au musée s’est jouée une histoire en trois temps, dont chacun est venu décrire un usage théorique et social du signifiant « cinéma ». Le premier consacre un appareil d’enregistrement et de projection des images en mouvement qui, parmi d’autres, a réussi à imposer un modèle technique et industriel de production des films. Point d’arrivée d’une culture visuelle façonnée par les panoramas, la photographie, le chemin de fer, la lanterne magique et les jouets optiques, le cinématographe consigne une vaste iconographie documentaire avant de s’ouvrir aux formes divertissantes du spectacle. C’est le moment Lumière. Pourtant, dès le début des années 1910, ce premier moment historique est contrarié par une demande d’art qui va profondément modifier son profil culturel et social.

Abstract

Kinetic art not only includes movement but often depends on it to produce an intended effect and therefore fully realize its nature as art. It can take a multiplicity of forms and include a wide range of motion, from motorized and electrically driven movement to motion as the result of wind, light, or other sources of energy. Kinetic art emerged throughout the twentieth century and had its major developments in the 1950s and 1960s.

Abstract

This book about the early screen representation of Auschwitz-Birkenau deals with the classic Holocaust film made in 1948 in Poland by Auschwitz survivor, director Wanda Jakubowska. The Last Stage (or The Last Stop) is a pioneering work – the first narrative film to portray the former Nazi German camp. Haltof discusses Jakubowska’s life and career before World War II, her imprisonment during the war, the prominent role that she played in the nationalized postwar Polish cinema, and problems she faced during the script stage. The monograph also discusses the unusual circumstances that surrounded the production of the film at Auschwitz-Birkenau and summarizes critical debates surrounding its release. Screening Auschwitz is the first detailed monograph on this classic Holocaust film. The book incorporates new materials and sources obtained through extensive archival research, and examines the impact of the film on other Holocaust narratives.

Abstract

What makes an image offensive? — This question is addressed in this volume. It explores tensions and debates about offensive images and performative practices in various settings in and beyond Europe. Its basic premise is that a deeper understanding of what is at stake in these tensions and debates calls for a multidisciplinary conversation. The authors focus on images that appear to trigger strongly negative reactions; images that are perceived as insulting or offensive; those subject to taboos and restrictions; or those that are condemned as blasphemous. In light of recurrent acts of violence leveled against images and symbols in the contemporary, globally entangled world, addressing instances of “icono-clash” (Bruno Latour) from a new post-secular, global perspective has become a matter of urgency.

Abstract

Museum Object Lessons for the Digital Age explores the nature of digital objects in museums, asking us to question our assumptions about the material, social and political foundations of digital practices. Through four wide-ranging chapters, each focused on a single object – a box, pen, effigy and cloak – this short, accessible book explores the legacies of earlier museum practices of collection, older forms of media (from dioramas to photography), and theories of how knowledge is produced in museums on a wide range of digital projects. Swooping from Ethnographic to Decorative Arts Collections, from the Google Art Project to bespoke digital experiments, Haidy Geismar explores the object lessons contained in digital form and asks what they can tell us about both the past and the future. Drawing on the author’s extensive experience working with collections across the world, Geismar argues for an understanding of digital media as material, rather than immaterial, and advocates for a more nuanced, ethnographic and historicised view of museum digitisation projects than those usually adopted in the celebratory accounts of new media in museums. By locating the digital as part of a longer history of material engagements, transformations and processes of translation, this book broadens our understanding of the reality effects that digital technologies create, and of how digital media can be mobilised in different parts of the world to very different effects.

Abstract

The fact that you are reading these words means you have already stepped over the threshold of a collection of what the author calls reflexive études. Here, the author is expanding on the word étude as it is used in music’s most ‘classical’ department, where it denotes a practice piece designed to address an isolated problem of musical technique, and transforms it to serve as a practical thought exercise for the (theatre) field as a whole. The reflexive étude therefore serves as a practical-theoretical exercise in trying to think one’s way to freedom from the (often) unconscious or semi-conscious assumptions and obstacles that the art actor constantly has to contend with. Implicit here is the notion that thinking through also constitutes an exercise and that the art of thinking is inextricably associated with art in general. Like musical exercises, the reflexive études are characteristically specific: each focuses on practice relevant to something particular – perhaps one performance, an issue of acting technique, an acute theatre -sociological situation, or the question of what a theatre script can and should look like. The ambition is to develop what I have called a reflexive dramaturgy. This conception of dramaturgy does not limit itself to analyses of the theatrical text, or to the theatre’s arsenal of calculated stage effects, but is capable of expanding its reach to identify other kinds of action that exert a powerful influence, despite their being seemingly inconspicuous. In this sense, reflexive dramaturgy becomes a kind of theoretical practice that seeks to identify and articulate those actions which (reflexively) set the limits for aesthetic experience, but which are often insufficiently covered by the ways that art and theatrical art view themselves.

Abstract
