Abstract

Machineries of Oil is an investigation into oil infrastructure in modern society, examining local power struggles over the construction of the global oil industry in a non-western context. This history is crucial for understanding the twentieth-century politics of the Middle East and the peculiar ways in which countries of the Global South have served as irreplaceable laboratories for producing knowledge and know-how on nature and society. This book will come at a time when tensions between the US and Iran, and tensions surrounding the politics of the oil industry in the Middle East in particular, have become unfortunately heightened in the wake of the change in US administration. We feel this book is particularly suited to the Knowledge Unlatched program because our reach to Middle East studies audiences is somewhat limited, and we’d like this book to be available to as many readers as possible, despite limited marketing resources to go beyond our usual channels.

Abstract

Virtuous Waters is a pathbreaking and innovative study of bathing, drinking and other everyday engagements with a wide range of waters across five centuries in Mexico. Casey Walsh uses political ecology to bring together an analysis of shifting scientific, religious and political understandings of waters and a material history of social formations, environments, and infrastructures. The book shows that while modern concepts and infrastructures have come to dominate both the hydrosphere and the scholarly literature on water, longstanding popular understandings and engagements with these heterogeneous liquids have been reproduced as part of the same process. Attention to these dynamics can help us comprehend and confront the water crisis that is coming to a head in the twenty-first century.

Abstract

Global urbanization creates challenges towards sustainability and human well-being. Urban areas are dependent on the ecosystems beyond the city limits but also benefit from the internal urban green places. An understanding of the importance of urban ecosystem services means that urban greenery can be designedly maintained or even expanded. As cities are expected to grow at a rapid rate in the coming decades, it is important that the ecosystem perspective is understood and valued by city planners and political decision-makers. This special issue highlights some aspects related to urban sprawl dynamics and urban ecosystem management. Observations and studies presented in ten papers show that urbanization affects essential ecological, economic, and social landscape functions, whose importance is often undervalued in cities worldwide.
