Abstract

This chapter is a set of accounts of the film Who is Europe? It is a conversationbetween the filmmaker and the editors of this book, some of whom were directlyinvolved in the filmmaking too. It is a good idea to watch the film before readingon. Abstract

This final chaptertakes up these questions, mining some of our ethnographies for support. One ofthese is the basis for a short diversion to a Turkish coffeehouse in what used tobe the edge of West Berlin. This is a marginal story that turns out to be central, allowing us to suggest that among the multiple Europes circulating and bickering in the air around us, there are still some others yet to be brought into sight. Afterthis, we close the book with some practical comments about what, in this time ofperceived crisis, should be done to re-orient ideas of the European past at the level of heritage practice.

Abstract

This open access book analyses Iberian expansion by using knowledge accumulated in recent years to test some of the most important theories regarding Europe’s economic development. Adopting a comparative perspective, it considers the impact of early globalization on Iberian and Western European institutions, social development and political economies. In spite of globalization’s minor importance from the commercial perspective before 1750, this book finds its impact decisive for institutional development, political economies, and processes of state-building in Iberia and Europe. The book engages current historiographies and revindicates the need to take the concept of composite monarchies as a point of departure in order to understand the period’s economic and social developments, analysing the institutions and societies resulting from contact with Iberian peoples in America and Asia. The outcome is a study that nuances and contests an excessively-negative yet prevalent image of the Iberian societies, explores the difficult relationship between empires and globalization and opens paths for comparisons to other imperial formations.

Abstract

Roman law is widely considered to be the foundation of European legal culture and an inherent source of unity within European law. Roman Law and the Idea of Europe explores the emergence of this idea of Roman law as an idealized shared heritage, tracing its origins among exiled German scholars in Britain during the Nazi regime. The book follows the spread and influence of these ideas in Europe after the war as part of the larger enthusiasm for European unity. It argues that the rise of the importance of Roman law was a reaction against the crisis of jurisprudence in the face of Nazi ideas of racial and ultranationalistic law, leading to the establishment of the idea of Europe founded on shared legal principles. With contributions from leading academics in the field as well as established younger scholars, this volume will be of immense interests to anyone studying intellectual history, legal history, political history and Roman law in the context of Europe.

Abstract

This chapter makes an empirical contribution bystudying whether the launch of BRI has led to a shift in Central Asian attitudestowards and perceptions of China. We discuss the interaction between China andeach of the five Central Asian states, highlighting local attitudes towards and perceptionsof the big neighbour. We focus on economic interaction, infrastructureand education initiatives as they are among the main pillars of the BRI agenda, while acknowledging that cooperation on political, diplomatic, and security issueshas been no less important for shaping perceptions of China in Central Asia. One limitation of our analysis should be mentioned. It is difficult to separateBRI analytically from other ongoing projects within the bilateral cooperationbetween China and the Central Asian countries, “as many bilateral agreementsare now being brought under the Silk Road and BRI umbrella” (Dave 2018,p. 100). We attempt to overcome this limitation by tracing changes in attitudestowards and perception of China in general since 2013, when BRI wasannounced, and whether the change can be attributed to the promotion of BRI.

Abstract

Aristotle’s neat compartmentalization notwithstanding (Poetics, ch. 9), historians and playwrights have both been laying claim to representations of the past – arguably since Antiquity, but certainly since the Renaissance. At a time when narratology challenges historiographers to differentiate their “emplotments” (White) from literary inventions, this thirteen-essay collection takes a fresh look at the production of historico-political knowledge in literature and the intricacies of reality and fiction. Written by experts who teach in Germany, Austria, Russia, and the United States, the articles provide a thorough interpretation of early modern drama (with a view to classical times and the 19th century) as an ideological platform that is as open to royal self-fashioning and soteriology as it is to travestying and subverting the means and ends of historical interpretation. The comparative analysis of metapoetic and historiosophic aspects also sheds light on drama as a transnational phenomenon, demonstrating the importance of the cultural net that links the multifaceted textual examples from France, Russia, England, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Abstract

This book examines how different agents and institutions within the Danish nation state have situated themselves within this complex landscape of competing appropriations of classical antiquity from the eighteenth century to the present day. In particular, it focuses on the use of classical heritages to construct both European and national identities (in the plural) and especially on how Danes in this period have engaged with a sense of European commonality through their engagements with the classical past.

Abstract

"The story of modernist architects in East Central Europe. The first half of the twentieth century witnessed the rise of modernist architects. Brokers of Modernity reveals how East Central Europe turned into one of the pre-eminent testing grounds of the new belief system of modernism. By combining the internationalism of the CIAM organization and the modernising aspirations of the new states built after 1918, the reach of modernist architects extended far beyond their established fields. Yet, these architects paid a price when Europe’s age of extremes intensified. Mainly drawing on Polish, but also wider Central and Eastern European cases, this book delivers a pioneering study of the dynamics of modernist architects as a group, including how they became qualified, how they organized, communicated and attempted to live the modernist lifestyle themselves. In doing so, Brokers of Modernity raises questions concerning collective work in general and also invites us to examine the social role of architects today."

Abstract

This book is a reflection on the politics of heritage in Europe at the present time,in a moment of pluralised conceptions of the political, social and demographicorganisation proper to Europe. It is not a book that seeks to survey, define orcharacterise an enduring ‘European heritage’ as an entity, but rather to explorewhat heritage does – how it is understood, instrumentalised and what it enables– within what we will argue is a ‘critical’ moment for both identities and geopoliticsin Europe.

Abstract

"From Darkness to Light explores from a variety of angles the subject of museum lighting in exhibition spaces in America, Japan, and Western Europe throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.Written by an array of international experts, these collected essays gather perspectives from a diverse range of cultural sensibilities. From sensitive discussions of Tintoretto’s unique approach to the play of light and darkness as exhibited in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice, to the development of museum lighting as part of Japanese artistic self-fashioning, via the story of an epic American painting on tour, museum illumination in the work of Henry James, and lighting alterations at Chatsworth (to name only a few topics) this book is a treasure trove of illuminating contributions. The collection is at once a refreshing insight for the enthusiastic museum-goer, who is brought to an awareness of the exhibit in its immediate environment, and a wide-ranging scholarly compendium for the professional who seeks to proceed in their academic or curatorial work with a more enlightened sense of the lighted space.
